BELLEVILLE - The Sugar River girls soccer team continued its roll, defeating Monroe 3-0 Thursday.

With the win, Sugar River improves to 9-1, 3-0 Capitol Conference. The Raiders have won nine straight games since a 1-0 season-opening loss to DeForest.

Sugar River's Abby Leahy put the Raiders on the board with a goal at 35 minutes, 41 seconds. Sugar River was clinging to a 1-0 lead at the half.

Sugar River's Aimee Sies scored a goal on an assist from Brooke Larson at 56:36 to give the Raiders a 2-0 lead. Sugar River junior Vanessa Narveson scored the final goal on an assist from Sies. Sies finished the game with two assists.

"Sugar River is very skilled, fast and physically assertive," Monroe coach Miriam O'Neill said. "We had some opportunities on goal. We just couldn't take advantage of them and put them in. We battled to the bitter end. I really felt like we played a tough game. It's nice to see them playing in a tough situation. They never gave up."

Monroe goalkeeper Reily Pond had 14 saves.

"She was absolutely brilliant," O'Neill said of Pond in goal. She had some really crucial saves. She had a fantastic game."

With the loss, Monroe drops to 3-2-2. O'Neill expects a young team with seven freshmen to learn from the game against Sugar River.

"It's not always good to play easy games," O'Neill said. "It's good to play tough competition. It brings out the best in your game."
