MADISON - Monroe alumnus Brent Quade is tied for second place in the 95th Wisconsin State Open after shooting a 5-under-par 67 Monday at University Ridge.

Quade, a 2007 Monroe graduate and 2006 WIAA Division 2 state champion, racked up seven birdies and nine pars in the first round. He birdied the 554-yard No. 2 and the 176-yard No. 3. He also birdied the 608-yard No. 6. Quade then birdied the 552-yard No. 9 to finish the day at 5-under-par. He also birdied Nos., 11, 15 and 16.

Quade in 2012 finished 16th place in the Wisconsin State Amateur Championship.

The tournament field includes 156 golfers with 74 professionals including Ryan Helminen of Menasha, the 2014 champion who shot 77-72-148 in the PGA Championship to tie Tiger Woods. The field includes the top college and amateur players.

Former Monroe Country Club golf professional Mike Muranyi was scheduled to tee off at 12:33 p.m. Monday before the rain hit. Muranyi gets a lifetime exemption to compete in the tournament after winning the Wisconsin State Open in 1983.

Muranyi was tied for 70th place at 2-over with eight holes to play in the first round before it got too dark. First-round play will resume today.

Muranyi got off to a solid start with three birdies and four pars in his first nine holes on the front. He had to settle for a double bogey on 402-yard No. 4 and was at 2-over on the front nine.

Kyle Bruce, a 2012 Monroe High School graduate and a member of the Edgewood College golf team, is in a 15-way tie for 109th place at 4-over 76.

Bruce had four birdies on Nos. 2, 3, 9 and 15. He finished with six bogeys and a double bogey on 33-yard No. 13.

Other former past champions are five-time champion Steve Stricker (1987, 1990, 1991, 1998, 2000) and Jerry Kelly (1992).

The top 60 golfers after the second round, which was originally scheduled for Tuesday, advance to the final round Wednesday.

For the professionals there is a $50,000 purse with $7,000 going to the champion.
