Potosi shuts down Monticello

MONTICELLO - The Monticello High School softball team committed three errors that led to a couple of runs for Potosi and the Chieftains rolled to an 11-0 win on Thursday.

Monticello senior Jessie Garrison struck out Potosi's leadoff hitter in both the first and second innings, but she still got on base after wild throws on dropped third strikes. The leadoff hitter came around to score both innings.

"If we don't have those there errors they don't have those five runs," Monticello coach Duane Garrison said. "We are a young team that will have some growing pains."

Potosi scored three runs in the first and two in the second to take a 5-0 lead.

Jessie Garrison went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Ponies.

Garrison pitched five innings and gave up five earned runs on 13 hits. She struck out three and walked three.

Monticello drops to 0-2, 0-1 Six Rivers East. The Ponies will host Juda-Albany on Monday.



Jefferson 6, Brodhead 1

BRODHEAD - Jefferson scored three runs in the first inning and cruised to a win over Brodhead.

Brodhead sophomore McKayla Hayes had two hits to lead the Cardinals.

Hayes put the Cardinals on the board with an RBI single in the sixth.

Brodhead sophomore Azzi Steiner pitched a complete game and struck out 12.



Mineral Point 7, Darlington 3

MINERAL POINT - Darlington freshman Bethany McDonald had three hits, but a four-run first inning was enough to drive Mineral Point over the Redbirds.

McDonald went 3-for-4 and senior teammate Ava Volkening was 2-for-3.

Darlington senior pitcher Tara Reichling pitched a complete game and gave up seven runs on 10 hits. She struck out two and hit one.



Postponements

Monroe's game at Oregon scheduled for Thursday was postponed. The game has not been rescheduled yet.

The Cheesemakers will play three games in a tournament on Saturday at Twining Park. Monroe will play Spencer at noon, Highland Park, Ill. at 2 p.m. and Pearl City at 4 p.m.

Black Hawk's game against Belleville slated for Thursday was also postponed. A makeup date has not been set yet.
