ARGYLE - The final drive followed a Hollywood script up until the final play.
With Pecatonica-Argyle facing fourth-and-13 from the Chieftains' 23-yard line, Potosi's Bryce McMahon sacked Pecatonica-Argyle's quarterback Logan Green to stymie a potential game-winning drive to give the Chieftains a 26-20 win over the Vikings Saturday.
The sack came one play after Green tossed what appeared to be a go-ahead touchdown pass to sophomore running back Cam Treuthardt, but it just glanced off his shoulder pads. The Vikings had three turnovers (two fumbles and one interception) and missed two extra points.
With the win, Potosi (7-1, 7-1 Six Rivers) moves into sole possession of first place in the conference, assuring the team of at least a share of the title. Pecatonica-Argyle (6-2, 5-2) still has a shot to share the conference championship if Belmont beats Potosi in the regular season finale. It's also still possible, if everything breaks right, that four teams could share the conference title.
Potosi's Brent Curtis scored three touchdowns to lift the Chieftains. Potosi's Teagan Frederick rushed for 101 yards on 16 carries. Treuthardt rushed for 56 yards on nine carries and scored one touchdown.
Pecatonica-Argyle sophomore A.J. Hendrickson had four receptions for 70 yards. Potosi's Riley Hawes had five catches for 148 yards and a 68-yard TD catch late in the third quarter to give the Chieftains a 20-14 lead.
Green connected with Ostby on a 5-yard TD pass to tie the game with 9 minutes, 41 seconds to go. The drive was kept alive by Ostby's 3-yard run on a fake punt. Curtis had a 5-yard TD run with 5:30 to go in the fourth quarter.
