MADISON - The Black Hawk girls basketball team's first state tournament appearance was bittersweet after falling to Potosi 49-42 in a WIAA Division 4 state semifinal Friday morning.

Black Hawk (23-3) suffered a blow when junior Kim Wellnitz fouled out with about 2 minutes, 37 seconds left. Potosi (25-1) made 8 of 10 free throws in the final 55 seconds to seal the win. The Warriors struggled from the free throw line in the fourth quarter, which included a 1-for-5 stretch when the Warriors trailed by just two points.

The Warriors came back from a 23-21 halftime deficit. Kim Wellnitz, after shooting 1-for-7 in the first half, heated up in the third quarter, scoring eight of her 11 points in the period.

Black Hawk junior Katie Place scored down low with 1:27 to go to cut the Chieftans' lead to 42-39. The Warriors also received a clutch 3-pointer from sophomore Melissa Wellnitz late to cut the Cheiftans' lead to 45-42 with 20 seconds to go, but that was as close as the Warriors would get.

The Warriors forced 23 turnovers, but committed 20 and the free throw shooting in the fourth quarter was too much to overcome.

Black Hawk seniors Paige Butler and Gabi Lehner scored 11 and nine points, respectively, in their final prep games.
