I'd like to tip my cap to the 41 people who voted for this week's selections. I'd also like to send out a loud thank you to the 14 readers who correctly submitted votes.
In case you missed the memo in the Dec. 3 edition of the Times - repeated online - information required for your vote to count is: First name, last name, city of residence. Votes can be cast by submitting a comment online to the voting story, by e-mailing myself or Mark Nesbitt (mnesbitt@themonroetimes.com), leaving a voicemail with one of us at the office, or by stopping by to drop off a vote. Voting each week ends at 5 p.m. Wednesday evening.
Having the name and city guidelines helps drive away multiple votes and to slow down the "popularity contest" between schools. A popularity contest is what we call it when some fans or readers always want their friends, classmates or neighbors to win. We want the selection to be about the numbers and impact on the game.
Another no-no would be the handful of votes from "different people" who all use the same e-mail address.
Our current process of voting is obviously not as fool-proof as I'd like it to be, but it is a little unrealistic to hold formal elections every week at city hall, like a choosing a city alderman.
In all, I think the selections were, for the second week in a row, the right picks.
Stay tuned to the Times and our Web site, www.themonroetimes.com, to see this week's nominees.
