CASSVILLE - After losing 7-5 to Black Hawk Thursday, Monticello softball coach Duane Garrison wanted to see how the Ponies would respond.

He only had to wait until Saturday.

Monticello (6-4, 2-3 Six Rivers East) received solid pitching performances from sophomore Karlie Klossner and the bats broke out in the second game as the Ponies swept a doubleheader from Cassville.

"I was hoping that we would come back really strong," Garrison said. We really got the bats going in the second game Saturday."

Klossner pitched a complete game in the first game and gave up just two runs on four hits. She struck out four and walked four.

Sophomore Becky Nelson went 2-for-4 with a triple in the first game and Olivia Doyle was 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

In the second game of the twin bill, the Ponies beat Cassville 10-0 in six innings. The last five hitters in the Ponies' lineup were a combined 12-for-20.

"That was a pleasant surprise," Garrison said.

Doyle started on the mound, but Klossner came in as a relief pitcher after Doyle walked and hit two of the first three batters. Klossner pitched six innings of shutout softball. She gave up only four hits, walked three and struck out one.

Monticello junior Alyssa Zimmerman was 4-for-4 with a double and four RBIs. Senior Mersadi Hilliard went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Klossner was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Black Hawk picked up its first win Thursday by rallying from a 5-1 deficit to beat the Ponies 7-5.

The Warriors used a five-run fifth to rally and take a 6-5 lead. Klossner walked two batters and junior Kayla Melland delivered an RBI single. Ashley Schiferl came through in the clutch with a two-run single and Jordan Rupnow smoked a two-run triple to help the Warriors take the lead.

Black Hawk senior Kim Wellnitz went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Schiferl was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Melland pitched a complete game and limited the Ponies to just four hits. She struck out one and walked five. Monticello junior Taylor Pfeuti was 1-for-1 and she walked three times; sophomore Desiree Marty was 1-for-2.
