MONTICELLO - After picking up their first win of the season on Tuesday, the Monticello baseball team split their doubleheader against the visiting Chieftains.
In the first game, with the score tied at two apiece, the Ponies scored the decisive run in the eighth inning to give them the 3-2 victory. On the mound for Monticello was senior Lucas Marty, who pitched all eight innings.
"Lucas (Marty) has been solid on the mound for us in all of his appearances," Ponies coach Scott White said. "He shut them (Potosi) down, and they really didn't pose a threat until the sixth inning."
Performing on both sides of the ball, Marty went 2-for-4 at the plate.
In the second game, Potosi climbed out to an early lead, thanks to a three-run first inning. Monticello's bid for a comeback started in the third inning, but in the end their efforts fell short as Potosi took the second game by a score of 6-4.
Leading the way for the Ponies' offense were Marty and his younger brother Logan Marty, who added a double. Despite the loss, White remained proud of the way his team battled back.
"We didn't just settle in the second game," he said. "We fought right down to the last out. With the way we've been playing lately, it's nice to see us get things rolling, get some momentum, and get our confidence going."
Cassville 8, Argyle 1
Cassville 9, Argyle 3
HOLLANDALE - The Argyle baseball team lost two games of a doubleheader against Cassville in Hollandale.
Cassville gained traction early in the first game, as Argyle was limited to only one run in the bottom of the third inning. The Comets took the first game by a score of 8-1.
In the second game, the Orioles struggled to make fundamental plays on defense, as Cassville got out to an early 5-2 lead after the fourth inning, and closed the game with another three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Mitch Dammen went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Orioles.
"I thought our pitchers played well all night," Argyle coach Chuck Bredeson said. "They did a good job in keeping the ball down. Cassville's first four hitters may be the best we've seen all season, (but) we got them to ground out. In the end, we just didn't make the routine plays, and that's where we continue to struggle."
Darlington 4,
Cuba City 2
DARLINGTON - The Darlington baseball team picked up their second win this week with a 4-2 victory over conference foe Cuba City on Friday.
For coach Matt Austin, his team's play of late shows how much progress the Redbirds have made in the past year.
"Last year we were on the other end of these types of games," Austin said. "It's nice to see that we're hanging in there and grinding things out."
Defense was the name of the game for Darlington. The Redbirds allowed only one run in both the second and seventh innings. Darlington scored two runs after two innings of work, and in the fifth inning the Redbirds got some more breathing room by adding another two runs.
"Our defense is playing great," Austin said. "We're doing a good job in keeping the ball in front of us, and we've really cut down on our errors."
Jason Singer started on the mound for the Redbirds, and pitched four innings.
Senior centerfielder Aric Geissbuhler had a double for Darlington.
Poynette 7,
New Glarus 6
POYNETTE - The New Glarus baseball team was one big inning away from collecting their first win on the season against cross-conference opponent Poynette on Friday. With the Knights leading 6-3 at the bottom of the seventh, the host Pumas collected four runs to narrowly escape with a 7-6 win.
With the bases loaded, the Knights limited Poynette to only three runs in the third. New Glarus would respond with its own three runs shortly after, leaving the Pumas in a large deficit at the bottom of the final inning.
"We played smart for six-and-a-half innings," Knights coach Ross Eddy said. "Unfortunately, we just didn't know how to play with a lead. It was a tough loss, (but) hopefully we can learn from this.
Tyler Molencamp batted 3-for-3 for the Knights with two doubles and three RBIs. Gavin Binger both went 1-for-2 and finished with an RBI.
River Ridge 3,
Black Hawk 2
Black Hawk 14, River Ridge 2
RIVER RIDGE - The Black Hawk baseball team's defense remained stout in six innings of work in the first game of a doubleheader against River Ridge, but the Warriors' efforts came up short in a 3-2 loss.
River Ridge scored its first three runners in the bottom of the first inning, but was held in check throughout the rest of the game. Unfortunately for the Warriors and coach Jeff Solberg, their offense was unable to muster enough firepower to get the win.
However, Black Hawk erupted for 13 runs in the second inning of the second game.
"I thought we were much more patient at the plate in our second game," Solberg said. "We didn't really try to settle in during our first game, (but) we did a great job of putting it all together there at the end."
Tayler Rupnow (2-for-3), Kurtis Paulson (2-for-3), and Tyler Peterson (2-for-4) paced the bats for Black Hawk in Game Two. On the mound in the second game for the Warriors was Reesan Ruch. The freshman pitched all five innings, allowing zero walks, zero earned runs, while striking out two.
