Ponies' Six Rivers East win streak at 32

MONTICELLO - The Monticello High School volleyball team extended its Six Rivers East Conference winning streak to 32 matches with a sweep of Albany on Tuesday.

Monticello (1-1, 1-0 Six Rivers East) defeated Albany in the conference opener in straight sets 25-14, 25-21, 25-13. The Ponies are 46-3 in conference matches the past four years.

"With it being our conference opener and our conference streak on the line, I think they were ready and put a lot more into it," Monticello coach Scott Smice said.

Monticello junior Bri Graber shared the team lead with six kills and four blocks. Junior teammate Brittany Disch and junior Megan Lehr also had six kills apiece. Monticello junior Jessie Garrison had five kills, seven aces and 28 assists. Chandler Hanson added a team-best 15 digs.

"The serving and passing were so much better than the tournament Saturday," Smice said. "If you can't get the serve over, you are giving free points to the other team."



Black Hawk 3, Pecatonica 0

SOUTH WAYNE - Black Hawk junior Sam Lovelace had seven kills and four aces to give the Warriors an early leg up on Pecatonica in the Six Rivers East Conference.

Black Hawk (1-1, 1-0 Six Rivers East) swept Pecatonica 25-8, 26-24, 25-14 Tuesday.

"They (Pecatonica) are a motivated and skilled team," Black Hawk coach Rachel Wolf said. "To come out and get the first set the way we did, I was very happy. I know we are going to come out and work hard. I think Pec will be right there."

Black Hawk senior Aleigha Sigafus had seven kills, and junior Jordyn Delzer had three blocks. Black Hawk senior Brooke Moore had a team-high nine assists.

Pecatonica was led by junior Liz Tisch who posted nine assists and three aces. Senior outside hitter Clara Moen had three kills, and senior Britt Miller recorded three blocks. Junior Lexi Phillips chipped in four digs.



Argyle 3, Barneveld 1

ARGYLE - Argyle proved showed it can be conference title contender by hanging on to knock off Barneveld in four sets.

Argyle stormed out to a big lead in the first set and cruised to a 25-14 win. The Orioles edged the Eagles in the second set 25-20, and then dropped the third set 14-25. Argyle rebounded and pulled out the fourth set 25-19.

"It's a great way to start the season," said Argyle coach Jen Butler, whose team finished second to Monticello last year. "Hopefully, it will set the tone for the rest of the year."

Sophomore Ashley Bruehlman posted a team-high eight kills and six blocks. Junior Kayla-Butler Paulson racked up 22 assists and six aces. Katie Larson had a team-high 17 digs for the Orioles.

"I think every game will be a challenge," Butler said. "We are going to take very game one at a time. We are not going to take any team for granted."



New Glarus 3, Poynette 0

New Glarus 3, Johnson Creek 0

POYNETTE - New Glarus won its two season-opening matches Friday.

The Glarner Knights swept Poynette 25-11, 25-13, 25-22 and then defeated Johnson Creek in straight sets 25-12, 25-5, 25-22.

New Glarus sophomore Julia Baranaby had six kills against Poynette, and senior Maddie Macht added five kills. Senior Alex Nealis had a team-high six aces and chipped in 11 assists. Senior teammate Vanessa Narveson had a team-best 26 digs for the Knights.

In the match against Johnson Creek, Macht recorded 20 digs and eight kills. Nealis had six aces and chipped in 11 assists.

New Glarus junior Devon Boll had a nine-point serving streak in the second set. Narveson had 16 digs, and McKinley Righter added three blocks.
