Ponies rout Orioles; 'Birds roll

ARGYLE - It took until the third quarter Thursday for Monticello's offense to flood in the points against the Orioles. And when it rained, it poured.

The Ponies (14-2, 8-0 Six Rivers East), ranked No. 7 in the state in Division 4, led winless Argyle just 18-15 at halftime before going on a 33-5 third-quarter run. Monticello won Thursday's game, 58-31.

"In the third quarter they upped their pressure with the press and forced us into some bad turnovers," Orioles coach Kurt Ritschard said. "We did a very nice job in the first half. Monticello is an explosive team."

Monticello's Tyler Meier scored 14 of his game-high 25 points in the third quarter. The Ponies also got 12 points from Tyler Ritschard and eight from Jacob Marty and finished 26-for-33 from the free throw line in the game as a team.

Nate Thomas scored 14 points for Argyle (0-16, 0-8).

Argyle travels to Juda (5-12, 2-6) Feb. 9 and Monticello hosts Albany the same night.

Barneveld 69,

Juda 26

BARNEVELD - It didn't take long for the Eagles to rack up the points on the Panthers Thursday.

Juda found itself behind 14-2 after the first quarter and 32-10 at halftime. A 22-7 third-quarter run by Barneveld put the game out of reach.

Joey Jordan led the Panthers with seven points. Logan Johnson had 18 for Barneveld (12-4, 7-1), which had 10 players score.

Darlington 57,

Iowa-Grant 40

LIVINGSTON - The Redbirds rebounded from Tuesday's shocking loss to New Glarus with a big win on the road Thursday.

Darlington (16-2, 10-1 SWAL) led 16-10 after the first quarter and a 17-7 run in the second quarter gave the Redbirds a 35-17 lead at the break.

Tanner Havens led Darlington with 13 points. Three others - Alex Erickson, Colton Carpenter and Tucker Wiegel - had eight or more points and 11 Redbirds scored in the contest.

Darlington's next game is Feb. 12 at home against Mineral Point.

Watertown Luther Prep 72,

New Glarus 45

WATERTOWN - The Glarner Knights were outscored 46-18 Thursday in the second half of a humbling loss to the Phoenix.

New Glarus (10-6, 3-4 Capitol South) was riding high after knocking off fourth-ranked Darlington Tuesday. The Knights opened the game strong and led 14-11 after the first quarter. By halftime, the advantage fell to just one at 27-26.

Ryan Bright led all scorers with 20 points for New Glarus. Cameron Jeglum and Nick Stuessy each had eight.

New Glarus travels to take on conference leader Wisconsin Heights (12-2, 7-0) Tuesday.
