Ponies roll by Faith Christian in regional

MONTICELLO - Sophomore Claire Klossner went 3-for-3 with four RBI to power the Monticello softball team to an 18-2 three-inning win over Faith Christian in a WIAA Division 5 regional quarterfinal game Tuesday.

The Ponies won the game on the 15-run mercy rule after three innings.

Monticello pounded out 15 hits and scored nine runs in both the first and second innings. The Ponies didn't bat in the third.

"We hit the ball hard," Monticello coach Duane Garrison said. "We were hoping to do what we did."

Monticello advances to play a regional semifinal game at top-seeded Johnson Creek today.

Monticello senior Jessie Garrison went 2-for-2 with two RBI, and senior Chandler Hanson was 2-for-2.

Monticello freshman Miah Brokopp pitched a complete game to get the win. She gave up two earned runs on three hits, struck out one and walked two.



Darlington 7, River Ridge-Cassville 4

RIVER RIDGE - The Redbirds scored three runs in the sixth and three runs in the seventh to pull off a thrilling comeback win in a WIAA Division 4 regional quarterfinal game.

Darlington sophomore Taylor Crist went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI, and senior Alexi Wagner was 2-for-3 with one RBI. Senior Tayah Paulson went 2-for-4, and junior Chelsie Golackson was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI.

"Chelsie's double in the sixth was huge," Darlington coach Karen Bennett said. "Taylor Crist's double in the seventh pretty much put the pressure on them. It was a good game."

The Redbirds (9-8) had 10 hits as they rallied from a 2-1 deficit.

Paulson pitched a complete game and gave up four runs on six hits. She struck out one, walked two and hit three.

Darlington will play at top-seeded Iowa-Grant today in a regional semifinal. Iowa-Grant swept two games from the Redbirds in SWAL action this season. The Redbirds lost to Iowa-Grant 10-0 April 11 at Sieg Field in Darlington and then lost to the Panthers 12-2 on the road May 8.



In other regional quarterfinal games, 10th-seeded Benton-Shullsburg defeated seventh-seeded New Glarus in Division 4. In Division 5, seventh-seeded Potosi rolled to a 15-0, five-inning win over 10th-seeded Pecatonica.
