BLANCHARDVILLE - Monticello senior Courtney Leuzinger continued her strong start to the season with a two-run home run to left field in the first inning to lead the Ponies to a 14-5 win over Pecatonica Tuesday.
Six players in Monticello's lineup had two hits or more against the Vikings. Monticello sophomore Jessie Garrison went 3-for-5 with two doubles. Seniors Jordan Garrison and Brecklyn Klosterman each went 2-for-4. Senior teammates Samantha DeVoe and Leuzinger each went 2-for-5. The Ponies have 31 hits in their last two games.
"The top of their order hit the ball really well," Pecatonica coach Chuck Meyer said. "They were super. In order to neutralize that we had to make plays in the field and we didn't do that and Monticello did."
Pecatonica (1-5, 0-2 Six Rivers East) committed seven errors. Pecatonica's Clara Moen went 2-for-3 to lead the Vikings.
Jessie Garrison pitched 5 1/3 innings and got the win for the Ponies. She gave up one run on four hits. She struck out one and walked eight. Leuzinger started on the mound and gave up four runs in 1 2/3 innings. She struck out three, walked eight and hit two batters.
Pecatonica senior Emily Scoville pitched a complete game and gave up 14 runs, but just five earned runs on 14 hits. She struck out four and walked two.
Juda-Albany 9, Black Hawk 2
JUDA - Nicki Becker pitched a complete game three-hitter to propel Juda-Albany to a 9-2 win over Black Hawk Tuesday.
With the win, Juda-Albany (5-0, 2-0 Six Rivers East) remains unbeaten. Becker gave up just two unearned runs. She struck out eight and walked one.
Juda-Albany coach Bill Davis said Becker's decision to play traveling softball and support from her parents pushing her has been a big part of her success early on.
"She (Becker) works hard," Davis said. "She has put in a lot of time during the summer. It does pay off."
The Panthers scored runs in every inning. Juda-Albany senior Cheyenne Ambler went 2-for-4 with a double to lead the Panthers. The Panthers took advantage of six Black Hawk errors.
"Errors kill," Davis said. "I'm sure they will tighten the ship. Good teams always take advantage of errors like we did tonight."
Black Hawk sophomore Morgan Stauffacher went 2-for-3 to lead the Warriors.
Black Hawk junior Rachel Ritschard pitched a complete game and only three of the nine runs she gave up were earned on seven hits. She struck out four and walked eight.
Argyle 6, Barneveld 3
ARGYLE - Sophomore Kayla Butler-Paulson went 3-for-3 with two doubles to lead Argyle to a 6-3 win over Barneveld.
Argyle (3-3, 1-1 Six Rivers East) scored three runs in the fourth inning to break open a 5-2 lead. The Orioles had five doubles as a team. Seniors Jenna Langmeier, Hannah Saalsaa and junior Katie Larson each had doubles in addition to Paulson's two doubles.
Argyle's Sarah Flannery went 2-for-3.
Larson pitched a complete game to get the win. She gave up three runs on seven hits. Larson struck out two and walked four.
"It's a few more walks than I wanted from the pitching," Argyle coach Heidi Ganshert said. "She (Larson) came through when I needed her to. We cut down on the errors and played really good defense."
Monticello 16, Belleville 5
Kubly hit for the cycle to lead the Ponies to a 16-5 win over Belleville Monday.
Kubly went 4-for-5 with a single, double, triple and home run, three runs scored and six RBI.
Senior teammate Courtney Leuzinger also went 4-for-5 with three runs scored. The Ponies pounded out 17 hits. Monticello freshman Karly Ready also hit a home run. Sophomore teammate Jessie Garrison went 2-for-4 and senior Samantha DeVoe was 2-for-5.
Leuzinger pitched six innings and gave up one earned run on six hits to get the win. She struck out five and walked six.
Belleville's Taylor Wallom went 2-for-3. Belleville's Ryley Helwig pitched five innings and gave up 13 earned runs on 16 hits. She struck out two and walked two.
Iowa-Grant 16, Darlington 6
DARLINGTON - The Darlington softball team put up a four-run first inning against Iowa-Grant Monday, but lost 16-6.
Iowa-Grant came back and scored eight runs in the second.
"After jumping on them in the first inning, I thought it was going to go good," Darlington coach Karen Bennett said. "Then the wheels came off in the second inning. We can't give up those big innings and expect to win against a good ball team."
Paulson pitched 1 2/3 innings for the Redbirds. Tara Reichling pitched the final 3 1/3 innings for the Redbirds. The Redbirds committed four errors.
Darlington's Tayah Paulson went 2-for-3 with a three-run home run. Teammate Taylor Cox was 2-for-2.
