Ponies fly by Comets

MONTICELLO - Still looking to stay within the mix of the Six Rivers Eastern Conference, the Monticello girls basketball team did just that by picking up a solid 54-22 win over Albany on Thursday, Feb. 6.

For the Ponies and coach Lori Brokopp, the game was just a matter of getting into a rhythm.

"We came out a little slow at the beginning of the game," Brokopp said.

"But I thought we were able to get fired up by the start of the second quarter. We started to press them and that was able to create some opportunistic steals for us."

Once they established their pace, Monticello was able to attack in a variety of ways on offense.

"After we got a feel of how things were going, we were able to try a lot of different things on offense to create various looks," said Brokopp.

"And I thought we did a good job in capitalizing on those opportunities."

Monticello junior Alyssah Kubly and senior Marissa Berg paced the Ponies, scoring 15 and 14 points respectively.

Sophomore Marley Malkow had 10 points for the Comets.

Argyle 51, Juda 13

JUDA - The Argyle girls basketball team started their game against Juda with a bang by racing out to a 17-3 first quarter lead. Unfortunately for the host Panthers, they were only able to compile 10 points throughout the remainder of the game, as they lost 51-13.

Entering halftime, Argyle had a 28-6 lead over Juda, and carried the momentum into the start of the second half as they held the Panthers scoreless in the third quarter.

A slew of Orioles players contributed in the win, as a total of nine players were able to score, led by Jessica Treuthardt and Kylie Johnsen with nine points apiece.

Juda (4-12, 1-6), who was only held to one field goal in the game, will hope to bounce back against Albany on Thursday, Feb. 13.

New Glarus 54, Waterloo 28

WATERLOO - The New Glarus displayed an all-around show on both ends of the ball in their 54-28 win over Waterloo on Thursday.

"We came together great both offensively and defensively," New Glarus coach Megan Scheele said.

"We were able to try a bunch of different things on both sides of the ball, and we did a solid job in our execution."

The Knights were able to hold the Pirates under 10 points in each of the game's four quarters.

Three players were able to reach double figures for the Knights, with Vanessa Narveson, Sierra Watrud, and Mandi Sargent each scoring 10 points apiece. New Glarus (7-8, 3-2) will host Marshall Tuesday, Feb. 11.

Iowa-Grant 48, Darlington 47

IOWA-GRANT - It was an oh-so-close finish for the Darlington Thursday night, as they were defeated by the slimmest of margins in a 48-47 loss against conference-foe Iowa-Grant.

After the first quarter, both teams were neck-and-neck with 15 points apiece, and in entering halftime, the Redbirds trailed by two points.

Iowa-Grant was able to outscore the Redbirds in the third, but thanks to a last quarter surge, Darlington was able to climb back late and force overtime.

The intensity carried over into the extra period, but unfortunately for Darlington, one point was the difference between a victory and a loss, as they were outscored four to three.

Mariah Wiegel had 16 points for the Redbirds (3-10, 2-6) who travel to Mineral Point on Tuesday, Feb. 11.
