MADISON - The Monroe girls tennis team didn't have anyone make it to the second day of the Badger Conference tennis tournament at the University of Wisconsin's Nielsen Tennis Stadium after Friday's first-round and quarterfinal matches.
"We knew today would be a tough test," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said. "We ended up drawing five opponents we previously had lost to. We worked hard, but we were only able to come away with one win."
Oregon's Leah Koopman, the No. 4 seed at No. 1 singles, defeated Monroe senior Eva Priewe 6-4, 6-1. Sauk Prairie's Emma Liverseed at No. 2 singles beat Monroe senior Katie Demianiuk 6-3, 6-2. At No. 3 singles, Monroe sophomore Ashley Placek defeated Reedsbrug's Jessica Swagel 6-0, 6-1. Placek played a tough match, but second-seeded Julia Gerhards of Oregon topped her in the second round 6-3, 7-6 (2).
"Ashley Placek had her best day of the season," Saugstad said.
Placek lost to Gerhards 6-3, 6-0 earlier this season.
"Ashley was hitting some really strong, deep groundstrokes during the match and was really working her opponent's weaker backhand," Saugstad said. "Ashley played her best match of the year, but just fell short. Ashley should be proud of the way she played."
Monona Grove's Paige Marten at No. 4 singles defeated Monroe's Skye Allen 6-0, 6-3.
The Silver Eagles' top doubles duo topped Monroe sophomores Maggie Setterstrom and Hallie Signer 6-0, 6-2. At No. 2 doubles, DeForest's tandem knocked off the Cheesemakers' Hannah Zweifel and Shannon Rabotski 6-1, 6-1. Sauk Prairie's No. 3 doubles team defeated Monroe seniors Morgan Quinn and Maija Liimatainen 6-0, 6-0.
"Our doubles lineup just ran into some better competition," Saugstad said. "In all three positions, we were playing fairly well and hitting shots that would have typically been putaways this season, but our opponents were getting the balls back and winning the points."
