Try Hockey for Free event is Saturday, March 1 at SLICE

MONROE - Boys and girls are invited to try hockey for free Saturday, March 1, from 9 to 10 a.m. at SLICE.

MONROE - The Monroe Avalanche Pee Wee B team hosted a home tournament this past weekend and came out with two wins and one loss, taking third place.

In Game 1 against Stoughton B on Saturday, Feb. 22, the first goal came in the third period from Bryce Montgomery, who scored a goal in front of the net to put the Avalanche up 1-0 with seven minutes to go in the game. Colton O'Connor launched a puck past the Stoughton goaltender to end the game 2-0.

Goaltender Heath Bear recorded 14 saves in the game.

In Game 2, the Avalanche took on Dubuque B - a team they had lost to twice during the regular season. Dubuque scored four unanswered goals in the first period. In the second period, the Avalanche fought back and only allowed one goal. The Avalanche finally got on the board in the third period with Ryan Molitor scoring a goal on an assist by Colton O'Connor. Dubuque eventually scored one more goal to end the game 6-1. Bear recorded 35 saves.

The Avalanche beat Sun Prairie B 5-0 in the third-place game at SLICE Sunday, Feb. 23. The game was even in the first eight minutes of the first period before the Avalanche turned it on, scoring three goals over a five-minute span. The first goal came off a pass from the blue line from defenseman Alex Henry who found Riley Jones. Jones put it on net and Colton O'Connor was there for the rebound to put the Avalanche on the board first. The second goal came on a rebound that was put in by Ty O'Connor to put the Avalanche up 2-0. The last goal of the first period came from Jones at the blue line to give the Avalanche a 3-0 lead.

The third period featured back-and-forth play until defenseman Kaiden Klitzke scored a goal on a penalty shot to give Monroe a 4-0 lead with three minutes to go in the game. Colton O'Connor found the back of the net on a break away pass from Klitzke to end the game 5-0.

Bear earned his second shutout of the tournament and recorded 24 saves in the game.

Pee Wee B will host Beloit B at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 1 and will play Janesville B in Janesville at 11:20 a.m. Sunday, March 2.



Squirt A

The Avalanche Squirt A team traveled to Beloit to take on the Blades A team Saturday, Feb. 22 and pulled out a thrilling 5-4 win.

The Blades came out strong in the beginning of the game and were up 3-0 through most of the second period. With one second on the clock in the second period, Hayden Roth scored a goal on assists by Tessa Janecke and Rob Schroeder. The Blades felt the momentum shift as the Avalanche gained strength the remainder of the game.

Tessa Janecke earned a hat trick with three straight goals, tying up the game 4-4 with 4:18 to go in the third period.

It was a battle between both teams. With 26 seconds to go, Alyssa Knauf hit one into the net to clinch a 5-4 win over Beloit. Goalie Aiden Runkle recorded 19 saves.
