BLANCHARDVILLE - The Pecatonica baseball team got some clutch-hitting to split a doubleheader from Belmont Thursday.

Belmont defeated Pecatonica 6-1 in the first game and shut out the Braves in the second game 10-0. Pecatonica sophomore Cory Linder went 2-for-3 in the first game to lead the Vikings.

Sophomore pitcher A.J. Hendrickson pitched six innings. He gave up three earned runs on six hits. He struck out three and walked eight.

"He had trouble with control in the first inning," Pecatonica coach Jim Strommen said.

The Vikings were limited to three hits in the first game. With the split, Pecatonica (19-4, 17-4 Six Rivers East) has the same amount of losses in the conference as Barneveld. However, the Eagles still have to play three more games to play before a showdown with Pecatonica May 28 in Blanchardville where a conference title could be on the line.

"He's a good pitcher," Strommen said. "We had some missed opportunities and we had some base-running mistakes. He got better as the game went on."

In the second game, Pecatonica sophomore Dakota Conwell went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI. Junior Brooks Chandler pitched three innings of one-hit baseball. Chandler struck out four and didn't issue a walk. Pecatonica senior Drew Schliem closed the game with three shutout innings and struck out two.

"We rebounded in the second game and put the ball in play better," Strommen said.
