PLATTEVILLE - The Pecatonica-Argyle football team picked up right where they left off last year, knocking off Potosi 36-6 in the season opener in the Six Rivers Jamboree on Saturday at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville's Pioneer Stadium.
With the win, Pecatonica-Argyle has won nine straight conference games.
It didn't take Pecatonica-Argyle long to jump out to the lead with a 10-play, 58-yard drive, culminating in senior Collin Argue's 5-yard TD run to give the Viking a 6-0 lead early in the first quarter.
"Early on, we got off to a good start," Pecatonica-Argyle coach Larry Green said. "Any time you can come out and win in Week 1 is a plus."
On the Vikings' second possession, senior quarterback Logan Green hooked up with senior A.J. Hendrickson on a 9-yard TD pass to extend the lead to 14-0. Green then recovered a fumble by the Chieftains to set up the next scoring drive. Hendrickson had a 17-yard TD run to give the Vikings a 22-0 lead with 4 minutes, 9 seconds to go in the first quarter. Green completed 9 of 14 passes for 135 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
Pecatonica-Argyle senior Kole Kent had four receptions for 103 yards. Hendrickson had four receptions for 71 yards and one touchdown.
The Vikings didn't miss a beat even though they had four new starters on the offensive line.
"They did a good job of coming out and knocking people around and hitting them," Green said. "They were not out there with a deer in the headlights look. I think week-to-week our line will only get better."
The Vikings got out to a strong start in the second half cashing in on a 10-play, 61-yard drive with Green scoring on a 2-yard run to give the Vikings a 28-6 lead. The big play of the scoring drive was Argue's 23-yard run. Argue rushed for 78 yards on 18 carries and scored one touchdown.
Black Hawk 52, Belmont 0
PLATTEVILLE - Black Hawk junior quarterback Michael Flanagan scored three touchdowns to help the Warriors roll to a 52-0 season-opening win over Belmont in the Six Rivers Jamboree at UW-Platteville on Saturday.
Flanagan had two touchdowns passing and one on the ground. He completed 4 of 6 passes for 59 yards and two touchdowns. Flanagan had a 1-yard TD run on a quarterback sneak early in the first quarter and Colby Argall caught a two-point conversion pass to give the Warriors an 8-0 lead.
Moments later, Flanagan connected with Kyle Lovelace on a 14-yard TD pass to give the Warriors a 14-0 lead. Black Hawk junior running back Brody Milz punctuated a four-play, 31-yard drive with a 17-yard TD run late in the first quarter to give the Warriors an insurmountable 24-0 lead.
"With these small schools sometimes you get into some mismatches," Black Hawk coach Cory Milz said. "Belmont is playing quite a few young kids. I was really happy with the first half. They didn't play down to the level of the competition. They played fast."
Milz rushed for 96 yards on nine carries and scored three touchdowns. Argall rushed for 119 yards on 11 carries.
Flanagan hooked up with Lovelace on a 12-yard TD pass and sophomore Rece Shelton ran in the two-point conversion to extend the Warriors' lead to 32-0. About midway through the second quarter, junior Jett Rufenacht intercepted a pass and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown to extend the lead to 38-0. Lovelace started at tight end for Jason Treuthardt who missed the game due to illness.
"Kyle did a good job as a sophomore stepping in at tight end," Milz said.
Black Hawk junior Ben Holland returned a kickoff 60 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter and Milz scored his second touchdown on a 14-yard run.
Walworth-Big Foot 28, Brodhead-Juda 27
WALWORTH - With Brodhead-Juda clinging to an 11-point fourth quarter lead in the season-opening game against Big Foot on Friday the game was suspended due to lightning.
When play resumed on Saturday, Big Foot rallied from a 27-16 deficit in the final 8 minutes to stun the Cardinals 28-27. Early on, Brodhead-Juda dominated the game. Brodhead-Juda senior quarterback Matt Schmitt's 5-yard TD run gave the Cardinals a 27-16 lead before the delay. Schmitt also tossed two touchdown passes in the first half Friday to help the Cardinals build a 21-7 lead.
The Chiefs marched 73 yards in nine plays, capped off by Jackson Enz's 5-yard TD run, to cut the Cardinals' lead to 27-22 with 5 1/2 minutes to go. With 11 seconds to go, Enz then floated a 19-yard TD pass to Pedro Sierra for the game-winning score.
"The lightning delay took away a lot of momentum from us," Brodhead-Juda coach Jim Matthys said. "It allowed both of us to make adjustmenets. The adjustments they made got the best of us. It was a typical first game with a lot of mistakes."
Brodhead-Juda will host Clinton on Friday.
"It will be a tough game for both of us," Matthys said. "My biggest concern is with our own team and getting better."
