PECATONICA - The Pecatonica volleyball team won its second Six Rivers East Conference match, defeating Juda in three sets Tuesday night.
The Vikings fought off early errors in the first game to rally and win 25-20 and fended off the Panthers to win the second game 25-22. They carried momentum into the third, capping the match with a strong 25-15 finish. The early correction, improvement and strong finish fit right into Pecatonica coach Cher Schliem's goal for her team.
"We're really looking for steady improvement, which we've shown with each match," Schliem said.
The Vikings (3-5, 2-1 Six Rivers East) were led by seniors Madeline Fischer and Lizzy Britt, who each led the team in kills with nine apiece. Britt also led the Vikings in digs, with 13.
"Lizzy Britt is our go-to offensively [and] defensively," Schliem said. "She plays all three positions. Wherever we need her, she just does a fantastic job."
Senior Ashley Johnsen was the team-leader in blocks with three, junior Alexandra Ihm notched five aces and senior Michelle Francois tallied 23 assists.
For the Panthers, senior Brittany Moe had five kills, junior Jessica Jordan had four blocks, junior Tabatha Davis notched 12 assists and three aces, and senior Cassie Benner had 21 digs.
"We knew Juda was going to be a very scrappy defensive team, so we worked hard in practices this week," Schliem said. "We were able to stick to our game plan."
Barneveld 3, Monticello 1
MONTICELLO - The Monticello volleyball team showed some flashes of determination and fire, but the Ponies could not string it all together and fell to Barneveld in four games Tuesday.
After dropping the first game 25-21, the Ponies rallied to win the second game 25-19. The strong play continued into the third, as Monticello jumped out to a 7-0 lead. However, they could not hold the lead and fell to Barneveld 25-19. The Eagles took the final game 25-18.
"We came out with some fire and determination. It was back and forth for a little while," Monticello coach Scott Smice said. "We had a run there for a little bit. We had the momentum going into the third ... but could not hold the lead."
Junior Clare Bruns led the Ponies with 18 assists, junior Marissa Berg notched 10 blocks and 10 kills, and senior Jordyn Kubly tallied eight kills.
"We just need to overcome some nervous moments in key situations. We need to push through those things," Smice said. "It just didn't come together for us tonight. Barneveld was the better team through and through."
Albany 3, Argyle 1
ARGYLE - Albany senior Cassidy Bump led the Comets past the Orioles in four games.
Bump racked up 14 digs, eight kills, five aces and two blocks to lead the Comets. Albany outlasted Argyle 25-22, 25-19, 15-25, 25-17.
"We came out ready to play," Argyle coach Selby Rideout said. "They just outplayed us in the first game. After that we had some service errors. I give them credit for serving aggressive. We had too many service errors to give it a shot. We struggled big time."
The Orioles (3-5, 1-2 Six Rivers East) committed 12 service errors. Albany senior Carlie Peters had eight kills for the Comets.
Argyle senior Kayla Ostby had 21 digs and 16 assists. Rachel Tollakson had six aces. Kim Pink and Rachel Saalssa each recorded five kills. Rideout noticed that Ostby had more digs than assists.
"Albany to their credit found the holes in our defense," Rideout said. "They took her (Ostby) out of the game setting."
