BRODHEAD - The Cardinals are having trouble hearing each other on the court, and it's not because a jetliner is stationed behind the bench.
"When we're down is when we seem to be quiet, and it's supposed to be the opposite," Brodhead head coach Erin Kammerer said after her team was swept by Orfordville Parkview 25-22, 25-18, 25-16. "When we're down, we're supposed to be louder.
"That's really a huge weakness. If we're not playing well and we're not communicating, it's really hard to get anything going."
The Vikings needed only about an hour to sweep Brodhead and get back to an even .500 in the Rock Valley South Conference standings (2-2).
"Parkview came to play tonight and we didn't. That's what it boils down to," Kammerer said.
Parkview jumped on top of the Cardinals early, taking an 18-11 lead in the opening game. A late 7-3 run by Brodhead pulled the score to 24-22, but a Viking spike ended the comeback.
In the second game, the Cards opened with the momentum, jumping out to an 11-8 lead. At that time, the Vikings turned up the pressure again.
Parkview tore off a 9-2 run to take a 17-13 lead, prompting Kammerer to call a timeout and sternly remind her team to communicate on the court.
"I'm expecting our seniors to take a lot of leadership and show the young girls what they are supposed to be doing and how they are supposed to be doing it," said Kammerer, whose squad has three freshmen and four sophomores. "I put a lot of pressure on my seniors to teach my young girls what it's supposed to look like out there."
Brodhead again jumped out to an early lead in the third game, taking four of the first five points and last holding the lead at 8-7. But the Vikings came back and rattled off an 8-1 run to put the Cardinals in yet another deficit.
"They brought it the whole game, and we seemed to be on a roller coaster. We had some good points and some really low points and we never really got it to work all at the same time," Kammerer said.
Senior Mariah Mohns led Brodhead with six kills while freshman Carly Mohns had a block and four kills. Sophomore Taylor Douglas and senior Megan Krupke each had two aces. Douglas also added six digs and Krupke had a team-high 11 assists.
Parkview's Morgan Strzok and Lauren McInyre each had four aces and Brittany Fitzgerald had seven blocks.
Brodhead (2-2) will get back at it Saturday at the Edgerton Tournament.
