JUDA - Argyle girls basketball coach Kurt Ritschard didn't want University of North Dakota recruit Ellen Kiser to beat them. That's why he used a box-and-one defense Tuesday night.
The box-and-one defense worked wonders for most of the game as Kiser battled foul trouble in the second half, but was still able to post a double-double (15 points, 10 rebounds) to lead Juda to a 46-36 win over Argyle in a WIAA Division 5 regional quarterfinal.
"We wanted to pack it inside to keep her from scoring and to keep her off the boards," Ritschard said. "We wanted to make someone else beat us. We wanted to make them beat us from the outside."
Argyle senior Danielle Treuthardt drilled a 3-pointer with 1 minute, 5 seconds left in the third quarter to give the Orioles a short-lived 25-24 lead. The Panthers (16-7) responded with a 16-4 run from the end of the third quarter that spanned into the fourth.
"I was confident in my team," Kiser said. "We all wanted to win. We knew it would take every single person to win and that is what we did tonight."
Juda senior Katlyn DeVoe hit a 3-pointer to spark the spurt. Juda senior C.J. Dunwiddie came up with a steal and layup to give the Panthers a 32-27 lead. Even when Kiser picked up her fourth foul and went to the bench, the Panthers' press stepped it up. Juda senior Amber Ramos, who scored 10 points, hit a jumper on the break and senior Courtney Moisan scored on a layup midway through the fourth quarter to give the Panthers a 41-29 lead.
"We all know when someone goes down someone has to step up," Ramos said. "It's not just a one person team."
Juda coach Curt Brown said he wasn't surprised that the game was so close in the second half. The Panthers trailed the Orioles in the third quarter in both their regular season games.
"Coach Ritschard and (Sean) Leary always do a good job of taking away what we want to do," Brown said. "If we would start the season all over again, Argyle will give a lot of teams in our conference a run."
The Orioles received a tough break when sophomore Jessica Treuthardt fouled out with 5 minutes to go. Argyle (7-16) was plagued by 19 turnovers and shot 10 of 19 at the free throw line. Danielle Treuthardt scored a team-high 14 points to lead the Orioles and junior Kayla Ostby had 12 points.
"They upped their pressure on their press," Ritschard said. "A lot of it was our passing. They forced some turnovers that we would like to have back."
Early on, the matchup between Six Rivers East Conference teams, had the makings of a game that would go down to the wire. Ramos hit three jumpers in the first quarter to help the Panthers take an 8-5 lead. Ostby answered with a 3-pointer late in the first quarter to tie the game at 8. Despite shooting just 30 percent in the first half (6-for-20), the Panthers led 15-14 at halftime. The Panthers shot just 33.3 percent (15-for-45) for the game.
DeVoe drilled a 3-pointer to give the Panthers a 20-16 lead with 5:02 to go in the third quarter. Danielle Treuthardt answered by hitting a 3-pointer to slice the Panthers' lead to 20-19. Danielle Treuthardt scored 10 of her 14 points in the second half including seven in the third quarter to keep the Orioles within striking distance.
When Kiser picked up her fourth foul in the fourth quarter, the Panthers picked up the intensity on their press.
"In a way when Ellen was out it changed the game," Brown said. "We were able to pressure more with our guards. I would have liked to have had Ellen, but she had four fouls."
Juda now gears up to play at No. 4 seed Randolph on Friday. The Rockets defeated Black Hawk earlier this season. Brown remains confident and understands the Panthers will likely face a zone.
"It's nothing new," he said. "They have a lot of size. When it's one and done you can play with anybody."
