JUDA - Post players Heather Boeke and Ellen Kiser haven't even played two full seasons of basketball together, but the Juda duo creates headaches for opposing coaches.
Benton couldn't stop Boeke and Kiser in the post and the Panthers throttled Benton in a 66-15 win Thursday night. Kiser and Boeke combined to score 47 points and both had double-doubles. Kiser finished with 25 points and 10 rebounds and Boeke had 22 points and 11 rebounds.
Juda (2-1) rattled off eight consecutive points in the first quarter by getting the ball inside. Even when the Zephyrs went to a 2-3 zone and 1-3-1 zone, the Panthers still pounded the ball inside with success.
"They have been playing together for two summers and one full season," Juda coach Curt Brown said of Kiser and Boeke. "That has paid huge dividends. Ellen and Heather are extremely hard working. They lead by example. They know how to use their size."
Brown understands the Panthers will have to be ready to attack any defense including the 2-3 and 1-3-1 zones, triple team or a box-in-one.
"We will see a lot of different defenses with our size," he said. "We will be mismatches for a lot of teams."
The 8-0 spurt to start the game included a jumper by senior Rachel Bartels. Boeke, a senior, scored on back-to-back possessions on putbacks to ignite the Panthers to an 18-2 first-quarter lead.
Juda didn't let up in the second quarter as the Panthers forced the Zephyrs into 15 of their 23 turnovers in the first half. Boeke hit a jumper on an inbound play and Kiser scored down low to spark the Panthers to a 33-6 halftime lead.
"We were all excited because it was our first home game," Boeke said. "We use our post a lot. We have two of the biggest girls. We have learned how each other plays. We know where each other is at on the court."
After playing part of last year on the junior varsity, Kiser as a sophomore has developed a rapport with Boeke down low.
"The whole team has helped me out," Kiser said. "They have made sure I'm comfortable and it's helped me to fit in and feel like a family."
Juda didn't let up in the second half as the Panthers went on a 20-2 third-quarter run. Kiser and Boeke scored 16 points in the run and senior Larissa Klemm converted a steal into a layup on the break to extend the lead to 53-8.
"The whole team knew we had to keep working together, looking for the open person and looking into the post," Kiser said.
