JUDA - Matt Schmitt scored a team-high 15 points and threw down a dunk to power the Juda boys basketball team to a 55-42 win over Monticello Tuesday.

Juda (6-11, 3-5 Six Rivers East) went on a 19-6 run in the second quarter to open up a 13-point lead at the half. The second quarter proved to be the turning point as both teams scored 22 points in the second half.

"Our defensive intensity picked up in the second," Juda coach James Pickett said. "We created some turnovers that led to transition points. We had three 3s in the second quarter and once the transition points started to fall, we could take advantage of some of their mistakes."

Pickett was also excited with the defensive effort in the second quarter limiting the Ponies to just six points.

"We just executed our gameplan," Pickett said. "We looked to deny dribble penetration and took advantage of the ball pressure."

Monticello senior Ben May scored a game-high 18 points. Teammate Matt Andrews added 12 points.

Juda's Skylar Stuckey added 14 points for the Panthers. The Panthers made 13 of 17 free throws, including nine in the fourth quarter to preserve the win. With the loss, Monticello drops to 1-16, 0-9.

"I think tonight we were able to handle adversity," Pickett said. "Both teams went on runs, and that was something we needed to work on: When things aren't going our way, are we going to react?

"We did a good job battling back when Monticello made a couple of runs."

Juda will play at River Ridge Friday in a non-conference game.

"I think it will be two evenly matched teams," Pickett said. "We're a very aggressive team and we look forward to the challenge."
