MONTICELLO - The Juda-Albany softball team isn't producing a lot of runs this season. But with Amber Ramos in the circle, the Panthers don't need many.
Ramos threw a complete-game two-hitter and recorded 18 strikeouts Monday as Juda-Albany edged Monticello 1-0 in a Six Rivers East Conference contest.
Juda-Albany senior Courtney Moisan collected a second-inning RBI on a bouncer to second base, and that's all the Panthers' senior pitcher needed.
"I've seen a lot of softball and she's one of the best pitchers I've ever seen," Monticello coach Duane Garrison said of Ramos. "When she wants to rare back and fire it and pick up a little extra speed, she does it somehow. She's fun to watch if it's not against your team."
Juda-Albany coach Bill Davis said Ramos "threw a heck of a game."
"She didn't throw a whole lot of off-speed stuff because her hard stuff was working so well and she was locating so well," Davis said.
The Panthers (8-5, 4-0 Six Rivers East) have a big week slated, with visits from Barneveld today and Argyle on Thursday. The Orioles took Juda-Albany to extra innings before losing in the teams' first meeting.
Davis said his team has an advantage in close games.
"In the tight games, we don't panic," he said. "We're not scoring a lot of runs, but we're a good-hitting team and it's just a matter of time until we can get a hit to get that run in."
Monticello (6-3, 2-2) received a gem from senior pitcher Karlie Klossner, who allowed six hits while striking out two and issuing two walks. Juda-Albany loaded the bases against Klossner in the fifth, but she induced Ramos into an infield ground out.
"Klossner threw 86 pitches and we were in the game," Garrison said. "That's all you can ask from your pitcher is to keep you in there. She pitched well, she played her position well. We just couldn't get a hit."
Said Davis: "We left a whole lot of people on base, but my hat's off to Klossner - she got them out of some jams."
Moisan was 2-for-2 and senior Katlyn DeVoe went 2-for-3 to lead Juda-Albany.
