MONROE - Abby Oudinot continues to surprise the competition with her ability as a first-year swimmer.

Oudinot, a Monroe sophomore, won the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 30.40 seconds. Madison Edgewood knocked off Monroe in a dual meet 134-35 Tuesday, Oct. 15 at the Green County YMCA.

"I really wanted to work on the 50," Oudinot said. "If I can work on it I can improve. I can improve my turns and breathing."

The Crusaders won 10 of the 11 events including sweeping the top three spots in four events including the 200 freestyle, the 200 individual medley and the 400 freestyle on Monroe's senior night.

"We did not swim our best tonight," Monroe coach Linda Moser said. "We were sluggish in the water. I don't know why. I don't know if they were tired or if it was senior night. They will have to get back and work hard in practice."

Monroe senior Angie Beaver finished third place in the 100 backstroke (1:23.30). Beaver teamed with Oudinot, Anna Meritt and Skylar Lassen to take third in the 400 freestyle relay (4:51.32). The Cheesemakers' 200 medley relay team of Beaver, Mackenzie Hesgard, Oudinot and Amanda Putz took third (2:26.08).

It was an emotional meet for Beaver who swam her final home meet.

"It means a lot to me," Beaver said of her final home meet. "Even though I'm a senior, I'm not going to be gone. My heart and faith will be with the team. I hope the team does the best they can next year."

Beaver is still focused on finishing strong in the backstroke and looks forward to trying to qualify for state.

"I need to really work hard on my backstroke," Beaver said. "I need to put my head back and open my shoulders more so my arms will rotate faster."

Lassen took third in the 100 freestyle (1:09.26) and she teamed with Grace Moehn, Putz and Meritt to finish third in the 200 freestyle relay (2:14.24).

Moser is excited about Oudinot in the 50 freestyle.

"She's not a long distance swimmer," Moser said. "Sprinting is her thing. The 50s are her race. We are trying to stretch her out into a 100. I think she could be in the top group of kids at the conference."

Moser is putting many of her top swimmers in three relays and one individual event Saturday at the Fort Atkinson Invitational.

"As a team and a coach we have to get them pumped up," Moser said. "A lot of them get pumped up swimming relays."

Moser said the Cheesemakers best chance at qualifying for state may come from several relays.

"I'm not making any predictions, but anything can happen."
