BRODHEAD - Argyle senior Riley Ostby hit a 3-pointer with 20 seconds to go to give the Orioles boys basketball team a thrilling 61-59 win over Brodhead on Monday.
The Cardinals had two chances in the final seconds to win or send the game into overtime. Brodhead had a ball deflected out of bounds off a player for a turnover, and the Cardinals missed a three-quarters-court shot that could have won the game.
Ostby scored a game-high 22 points, and senior teammate Kyle Emberson added 17 points and knocked down four 3-pointers.
"I didn't feel like we played as well as we can," Argyle coach Justin Jenson said. "It's always good to win a close game. It's a good character win. You need those to get ready for the tournament. Guys did what they needed to do to get the win."
Brodhead's Justice Tway scored a team-high 20 points. Teammate Josh Pickel added 14 points, and Tyler Flannery had nine points. Pickel and Parker Johnson each made two 3-pointers for the Cardinals.
Argyle junior Collin Argue chipped in nine points to help Argyle improve to 10-4, 4-3 Six Rivers East.
Brodhead (4-10, 2-7 Rock Valley South) has lost four straight games. Brodhead will play at Evansville (12-2, 8-1 Rock Valley North) on Thursday.
Albany 55, Palmyra-Eagle 47
PALMYRA - Albany junior Brock Gilkes hit a 3-pointer to start the second half, and the Comets clamped down on defense to pull out a comeback win.
Albany (9-5, 4-3 Six Rivers East) trailed by nine points early on. Albany senior Tyler Dahl, who scored a game-high 22 points, came through with a couple of steals, and the Comets closed the first half on a 15-6 run to tie the game at 25.
"We came out kind of flat in the first half and were in a hole," Albany coach Derik Doescher said. "I think the big thing is our defensive intensity picked up in the second half. We just preached we could flat-out outplay them in the second half."
The Comets outscored the Eagles 30-22 in the second half and never trailed after Gilkes drilled the 3-pointer.
Gilkes added 12 points, and junior Connor Trow chipped in eight points and hit two of the Comets' four 3-pointers.
