ARGYLE - It took two overtimes to decide a winner in Tuesday night's conference matchup between Monticello and Argyle. A clutch 3-pointer by Katie Zwicker with eight seconds remaining in the second overtime gave the Orioles a 56-55 victory over Monticello.
Argyle coach Kurt Ristchard said the Orioles, who were without Kylie Johnsen due to a concussion she suffered in the previous night's game, stepped up to the occasion to come away with the win.
"I'm very proud of our team," Ristchard said. "We were a little short-handed, but I'm happy with the way our team responded."
The Orioles had three players score in double figures, led by juniors Josie Thoman and Jenna Langmeier, who each scored 13 points apiece. Zwicker contributed an additional 12 points, but none were bigger than her last-second 3-pointer, which gave her team the edge over the Ponies.
For the Ponies, it was a difference of two halves for coach Lori Brokopp and her crew.
"We missed a lot of easy shots in the first half," Brokopp said. "But I liked our energy coming out of halftime, and we battled back."
Although her team was on the losing end of a close game, Brokopp said she hopes her team will learn from such times and respond. "I told them it was a tough loss, (but) you have to learn and reflect on these moments and bounce back."
Alyssah Kubly scored a game-high 25 points, including a solid 16-for-18 shooting performance at the free throw line.
"I'm very proud of the fact that she was able to step up and knock down some key free throws for us," Brokopp said.
Jordan Garrison (10 points) also scored in double figures for the Ponies, who will look to bounce back from their loss when they host Pecatonica on Friday night.
