ARGYLE - For the first time in Danielle Treuthardt's career, Argyle defeated Black Hawk in volleyball. Well, the same could actually be said for any of this year's Orioles.
"It feels really good. Our energy was upbeat. It feels awesome," said Treuthardt, a senior who had 11 kills, five aces and four blocks in a four-set win Tuesday. "We came together as a team. We really wanted to beat Black Hawk because we hadn't in so long."
Argyle came out on fire and won the first game 25-12, before teetering in the second set to lose 18-25.
"We didn't play well in Game 2," Orioles coach Shane Johnson said. "In Game 1, everything happened so incredibly fast. We went on a big run with a lot of hustle plays and throwing things together. In Game 2 we didn't have those terrific plays or play particularly well."
Black Hawk kept the pressure on Argyle in the third set, holding a 20-17 lead thanks to some ferocious play by sophomore hitter Jen Wellnitz.
"Jen Wellnitz is freakishly athletic - an incredibly athlete," Johnson said. "When you play Black Hawk right now you have to key in on what she is doing. It's scary to think how good she's going to be in a couple of more years."
Wellnitz finished with a match-high 15 kills and added three blocks and five aces.
Despite trailing deep into the third game, the Orioles found a way to bounce back. A 6-0 run sparked by a pair of aces from Treuthardt made it 23-20 and moments later the set was over.
"The girls really showed some growing-up tonight. We were able to finish plays and finish games in pressure situations. That's growing up," Johnson said. "Danielle dropped a couple serves short, which was a great job by her. They were playing serve receive deep and that sent them scrambling. That was big by her. She had a big night."
Argyle had all the momentum in the fourth game, with Black Hawk making one short 5-0 run to keep things close before losing 27-17.
"I think there are times when we play really well and then there are times where we break down on the fundamentals," Warriors coach Rachel Wolff said. "You can't play a team like Argyle and break down. They did a great job capitalizing on the errors that we made."
After years of dominating the Six Rivers East - Black Hawk (4-2) went undefeated in conference play from 2007-2009 and lost just two matches in 2010 - the Warriors find themselves on the outside looking in.
"I don't think we've ever had two losses this early in the season before," Wolff said. "I think that we have a lot of talent, but we have to put that into teamwork. We are solid all the way around, but we have just broken down at key times."
Argyle, meanwhile, is basking in the limelight. After years of rebuilding a winner, the Orioles (5-1) came into the season with high hopes of a conference title and are in second place behind undefeated Monticello.
"Losing this one would have been everything. We wouldn't have had any chance at winning conference," Treuthardt said. "We just have to beat Monticello if we want any chance of getting it."
The next time Monticello and Argyle meet will be Tuesday, Sept. 27 in Argyle. Before then, the Orioles have to play at Albany on Thursday. Black Hawk next plays at Barneveld on Tuesday.
