BARNEVELD - The Argyle softball team dug itself a hole, but in stunning fashion almost pulled off an improbable rally before falling 6-5 to Barneveld in a WIAA Division 4 regional championship game Thursday.
Argyle entered the seventh inning trailing, 6-0.
"In my mind we just had to put some hits together," Argyle coach Heidi Ganshert said. "One way or the other, we had to get some runs. We did that."
Argyle's Jackie Dammen doubled in the seventh to ignite the rally. The Orioles received a big two-run single by senior Kelsey Ostby and an RBI single by Jeannie Dammen.
The Orioles had the game-tying run on second with one out, but the Eagles recorded the second out on a fielder's choice and Jodi Fischer struck out to end the threat.
It's the second straight loss in a regional title game for Argyle. The Orioles lost to Monticello in a regional final last year.
Ostby had two hits and the Orioles had doubles from Jackie Dammen, Fischer and Danielle Treuthardt.
Argyle sophomore Kelsey Bartels pitched six innings and gave up four earned runs on seven hits.
Argyle finished the season 9-17.
"I was very proud of them," Ganshert said. "They came through. They did everything we had to do. We had a lot of doubles, just not enough in a row to get some runs in.
