MONROE - Coming into a dual match against Oregon, the Monroe boys tennis team was riding a five-match winning streak, but the Cheesemakers would get a chance to gauge how far they have come against a team that made a run to the Division 1 state semifinals last year.
Oregon snapped Monroe's winning streak, handing the Cheesemakers' a 6-1 loss Tuesday.
"Oregon is an extremely good team," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said. "Early in the match it looked like we had a chance to win No. 1 and 2 singles and No. 1 and 2 doubles. We were up in all of the sets. I really give Oregon credit. They really rose to the occasion in the tight matches and came up with the big points when they needed to."
With the loss, Monroe drops to 5-3, 2-1 Badger South. The lone win for the Cheesemakers came from seniors Matt Monahan and Kevin Noriega at No. 1 doubles. Monahan and Noriega defeated Oregon's Matt Reisdorf and Spencer Krebsbach in three sets 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.
"I told the boys after the match that there are two paths we could take from here," Saugstad said. "We could be content with the fact that we made this a close match and be fine with the results, or we can work like crazy in practice to fix up our weaknesses so that when we see Oregon later on in the season, those close matches we lost today become close matches we win."
With the win at No. 1 doubles, Monahan and Noriega improved their record to 7-1.
"When Matt and Kevin are hitting smart, aggressive shots and putting away their volleys, they are a tough team to contend with," he said.
Oregon sophomore Calvin Schneider at No. 1 singles defeated Monroe senior David Shon in three sets 2-6, 6-2, 6-3. Oregon sophomore Charles Donovan at No. 2 singles defeated Monroe sophomore Silas Setterstrom 7-6 (3), 6-2.
"In the first set, David was taking it to Schneider and had him on the defensive the whole time," he said. "In the second set the roles reversed and Schneider was the aggressive one."
Shon and Schneider were tied 3-3 in the third set. Shon last to Schneider last year 6-2, 6-0.
"David just couldn't get the few big points he needed to," Saugstad said. "This just shows how much David has grown."
Oregon's Drew Christofferson at No. 3 singles beat Monroe senior Zach Hendrickson 6-0, 6-0. At No. 4 singles, Oregon senior Will Sanford defeated Monroe senior Rhett Katzenberger 6-1, 7-5.
Oregon's Sam Schaeffer and Logan Piper at No. 2 doubles beat Monroe senior Jeremy Miller and sophomore Kody Althaus 7-5, 6-3. At No. 3 doubles, Oregon's Sam Ast and Kyle Rebrauer defeated Monroe's Keyton Friske and Cole Oudinot 6-1, 6-1.
"We were so close in so many matches," Saugstad said. "I'm proud of the way we played because Oregon is by far the best team we've seen this season."
