Oregon stymies Monroe tennis team

OREGON - The Monroe High School girls tennis team stumbled to a 7-0 loss against Oregon on Tuesday.

"This was a disappointing result today," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said. "We really thought we were going to be right in this match, so losing 7-0 was not the result we were looking for. We had two close three-set matches, a close two-setter and so many deuce games in all of the matches. When it came to must-win points to close out games, we just couldn't come up with the clutch shots."

The three-set matches came in doubles.

Monroe's No. 1 team of sophomores Maggie Setterstrom and Hallie Signer fell 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 to Oregon's Madeline Bjerke and Kalli Choles.

Setterstrom and Signer rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the third set to pull even at 4-4. Signer held a 40-15 lead on her serve, but Saugstad said "Oregon came up with some big shots and we dropped four straight points" and lost the game.

"Maggie was active around the net and hit some nice lobs, and Hallie was putting more pace on the ball tonight," Saugstad said. "It was just a shot here or there that cost us the match."

Monroe's No. 3 teams of seniors Maija Liimatainen and Morgan Quinn dropped a 3-6, 6-0, 6-4 decision to Sydney Copus and Hayley Copus. The Monroe duo was ahead 4-3 in the final set before falling.

"Morgan and Maija have improved so much this year and wanted this one so bad and did so many good things during the match," Saugstad said.

Also in doubles, Monroe's No. 2 team of seniors Hannah Zweifel and Shannon Rabotski lost 6-1, 6-0 to Arianna Nasserjan and Jess Bartelt.

In singles, Monroe senior Eva Priewe fell 6-2, 6-1 to Leah Koopman at No. 1, senior Katie Demianiuk lost 6-3, 6-2 to Renee Lewandowski at No. 2, sophomore Ashley Placek was defeated 6-3, 6-0 by Julia Gerhards at No. 3, and sophomore Skye Allen lost 6-3, 6-4 to Isabelle Krier at No. 4.

"Skye Allen showed a lot of hustle," Saugstad said. "Skye came up with a lot of good shots.

"I felt that Katie Demianiuk's match was closer than the score indicated. There were a lot of good points and nice shots, but Katie just missed a few more balls than the opponent."

The Cheesemakers will honor seven seniors Thursday when they host Monona Grove for Senior Night.
