OREGON - The Monroe girls basketball team went through a tough stretch trying to score in the second half and Oregon pulled away to beat the Cheese-makers 43-18 Saturday, Dec. 14.
Oregon (4-0, 1-0 Badger South) jumped out to a 12-5 lead in the first quarter and led by 12 points at the half. The Panthers went on an 8-0 run in the third quarter to open up a 32-12 lead. With the loss, Monroe drops to 2-2, 1-1 Badger South.
"I knew they were a very good team and we would have our work cut out for us," Monroe coach Sam Mathiason said. "They pressed us, but I thought we handled it pretty well. We didn't take care of the ball as well as we needed to. We had a lot of turnovers in the halfcourt and we struggled to convert. We just had a hard time scoring."
Oregon 6-foot 1 senior Maddy Gits, a Saint Louis University recruit, scored a game-high 13 points. The Panthers also feature a strong post player in 5-11 senior Riley Rosemeyer and a 6-footer in Hannah Kane off the bench.
Monroe sophomore Brooke Adams scored a team-high seven points and made two 3-pointers. Seniors Whitney Disch and Taylor Barrett each added three points.
"I knew they (Oregon) had good size," Mathiason said. "We just have to keep working to improve. It's another step in the road."
Monroe will play at Sauk Prairie at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. The Eagles are led by Georgia Breunig, a Northern Illinois University recruit.
Mathiason said it's too early to tell how the Cheesemakers match up. Monroe lost to the Eagles 51-40 last year, but played without several players due to injuries.
"They have a new coach and they have played a couple of good teams in Waunakee and DeForest," Mathiason said of the Eagles. "I think they are still getting used to the new coach and a new system."
