OREGON - Although the score may not indicate it, Friday wrestling match between host Oregon and Monroe was competetive and intense all throughout. In the end, Oregon prevailed with a convincing 55-21 victory over the Cheesemakers.
"A lot of our matches were competitive," said coach Tom Witt of his team's first match of the season.
Picking up wins for Monroe were Jacob Ritchards (106 pounds) who won his match by way of forfeit. Winning by way of a pin was Mitch Millner (114). Both McKenzy Foley (145) and Hayden Arneson (170) came away with a victory over their opponents, winning by a score of 1-0 and 13-8, respectively.
Even though the Cheesemakers didn't come away with the victory, Witt said much can be made for the rest of their season in terms of getting better with each match and finding the positives in their efforts.
"We are very young, as we have five freshmen and three sophomores," Witt said. "I told our guys that we are going to take some lumps this year, but our goal is to get better with each match."
Although Mitch Swanson lost hist match at 160 pounds, Witt said he was pleased with the way he competed.
"I was impressed with the way he performed tonight," he said. "He was facing a state-qualifier from last year, so even though we didn't get the result that we had hoped for, I am proud of his efforts."
For now, Monroe will shift its focus on its match today as they travel to Reedsburg for their second match of the season.
