MONROE - Miriam O'Neill said prior to the season that the Monroe girls soccer team would work hard to score more goals on set pieces in 2012.
The Cheesemakers aren't wasting any time backing up their coach's words.
Senior Chelsea Haffele scored off a corner kick and sophomore Vanessa Studer scored on a free kick Thursday in Monroe's 6-2 loss to Oregon in the Cheesemakers' home and Badger South Conference opener at Honey Creek Park.
"It's something we wanted to do more of and both goals were very nice," O'Neill said. "That's something that in the past we haven't managed to do too often."
Not only did the Cheesemakers (0-2, 0-1 Badger South) score off the set pieces, but the second-half goals were the first Oregon (3-0, 2-0) has allowed this season.
"It's their third game and they hadn't been scored on yet, so that's a positive for us that we got through their defense and no other team has so far," O'Neill said.
Freshman Kelsey Jahn scored the game's first three goals in helping stake the Panthers to a 4-0 lead. Jahn's first high school goal came in the 10th minute and Oregon took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Panthers coach Julie Grutzner was impressed with the Cheesemakers' first-half play defensively.
"Vanessa Studer was dominating our center mid(fielder) and we just couldn't get anything through," Grutzner said.
The Panthers changed from a 4-5-1 attack to a 4-4-2 in the second half, and Jahn scored in the 50th and 54th minute. It was a welcome sight for Grutzner, who lost her top two scorers from last season to graduation and whose top returning scorer, Kathryn Hockett, is injured.
"We're scrambling to figure out who can score," Grutzner said.
Mikayla Kaeppler scored in the 58th minute to push Oregon's lead to 4-0 before Haffele scored her first of the season in the 62nd minute on a nice effort play off a corner.
"It was a short corner and I just saw an opening," Haffele said. "We haven't had many open shots, so someone had to start with the shots. We have people who can shoot, but maybe are having some beginning of the season nerves. Once we get on track, we should be able to get more shots on goal."
Said O'Neill: "That was a lovely goal by Chelsea and nice start for her season as well. She had a very good game."
The Panthers extended their lead to 6-1 before Studer scored her third goal in two games off a free kick in the 75th minute.
Senior goalkeeper Rachel Wellnitz made eight saves.

POYNETTE - Sierra Watrud scored less than four minutes into the game and Elle Joseph had two goals for the Raiders.
Riley Rung, Audrey McGowan and Shelby Hubbard also scored goals for Sugar River and Hailey Hehn had two assists.
Goalkeepers Raylynn Jelle and Anya Schween made three saves to share the shutout.
