Pecatonica 9, Belmont 2

Pecatonica 5, Belmont 2

BLANCHARDVILLE - The Pecatonica baseball team remains in contention for a Six Rivers East Conference championship after rolling to a doubleheader sweep of Belmont.

Pecatonica (16-4, 13-4 Six Rivers East) beat Belmont 9-2 and 5-2 to remain one game behind Barneveld in the conference.

"Our pitching was the story for us," Pecatonica coach Jim Strommen said. "It was a needed performance by Tyler (Hodgson) and Chase (Norton). It saved us some innings for Drew and Lucas because we have been using them a lot."

Pecatonica's Tyler Hodgson pitched 5 2/3 innings in the first game to get the win. He gave up two runs on four hits. He struck out seven and walked three. Pecatonica junior Drew Schliem pitched 1 1/3 innings of shutout relief. Pecatonica senior Lucas McKeon and Schliem each went 2-for-3 at the plate. The Vikings broke the game open with a six-run fifth. Hodgson had a key three-run double in the fifth and the Braves were plagued by four walks.

"That was a big blow," Strommen said. "That gave us some breathing room."

In the second game, Pecatonica's Chase Norton pitched four innings to get the win. He gave up two runs on two hits. He struck out four and walked one. McKeon pitched three shutout and no-hit innings in relief. He struck out six.

Pecatonica's Kyle Kleppe went 2-for-3 and Brooks Chandler was 2-for-4 for the Vikings. Schliem finished 2-for-5.

"We are still chasing them (Barneveld)," Strommen said. "We just have to take care of our own business."

Darlington 5, Boscobel 4

DARLINGTON - Darlington ace Jason Singer stepped up for his Redbirds team in their nine-inning game against Boscobel, where the senior pitched a marathon of a game in nine innings of work, where he struck out eight batters, allowed seven hits, three runs, and only two walks.

Both Darlington and Boscobel traded runs between the second and fifth innings, and as the game got extended, the Redbirds proved to be the team with the most left in the tank.

"It's nice to win these close games," Darlington coach Matt Austin said. "In previous years, we used to be on the opposite end. (But) I think our experience in those games have proved to be helpful in some similar situations that we've face this year."

Cody Hardyman and Singer each finished 2-for-5 with a double. Freshman Jesse Sturtz finished 2-for-4 with a double.

Highland 13, Argyle 2

Highland 21, Argyle 1

HIGHLAND - After having perhaps one of their best offensive outings against Albany on Thursday, the Argyle baseball team dropped their doubleheader to the Six Rivers West's top team.

"Our one through five hitters played fine tonight," Argyle coach Chuck Bredeson said. "The bottom of our lineup was where we struggled and weren't so successful."

In game one, the Orioles managed only two runs between the third and fourth innings, while the host Cardinals jumped out to 10-2 lead after four innings of work. Riley Ostby finished 2-for-3 while Brock Bruehlman finished 2-for-2 in game one.

Game two wasn't much different, as Argyle's lone score in the first inning could not hold up against Highland's 11 runs through the first three innings. Ostby finished game two with a 2-for-3 performance.

"We just weren't making the routine plays tonight," Bredeson said. "We could've made a lot more plays at the plate."

Argyle will play another doubleheader against Pecatonica on Monday, May 19.

Marshall 5,

New Glarus 3

NEW GLARUS - Kyle Larson turned in a solid pitching performance, but Marshall clipped the Glarner Knights 5-3.

"It was a really good back-and-forth game," New Glarus coach Ross Eddy said. "It was nice to see them play really hard. Marshall is one of the top teams in the conference."

Larson pitched six innings and gave up four runs on six hits. He struck out two and walked three.

"Kyle threw a great game," Eddy said.

Tyler Molencamp and Larson each hit doubles for the Knights.
