MONROE - The Monroe girls tennis team was in a familiar position battling Oregon in a close match Thursday night.

Oregon won a three-set match and two other nail-biting matches to knock off the Cheesemakers 4-3. For the Cheesemakers, the loss came on the heels of a win by Alisa Fager in a decisive match against Stoughton on Tuesday to give Monroe a 4-3 win. The tables were turned on Thursday.

"I knew Oregon was a little better than Stoughton and it would be a 4-3 one way or the other," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said. "We played well. We just couldn't pull out the one more win we needed. We made some physical errors, but mentally we were much sharper and were making smarter plays. I'm encouraged by a lot of the positives I saw tonight. The difference just was that Oregon is a better team than Stoughton."

Monroe junior Sarah Wong at No. 4 singles defeated Hailey Morey 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. Juniors Ellie Grossen and Chandra McGuire at No. 1 doubles defeated Alexa Nelson and Michelle Peterson 6-2, 6-3. The other win for the Cheesemakers came from the No. 3 doubles duo of Paige Prien and Amber Jenson who defeated Danielle Keller and Lauren Jacobson 6-1, 6-0.

"They took over the match at the net and really looked impressive," Saugstad said of Prien and Jenson.

Saugstad also credited Wong for her aggressive play.

"Sarah was running all over the court and hitting great angles," he said. "Sarah has improved a ton so far this season."

Oregon's Leah Koopman at No. 3 singles defeated Fager in three sets 7-6 (8), 4-6, 6-1.

"In the third set, Alisa hit some very good shots," Saugstad said. "The girl she played just didn't miss and hit some great return shots."

At No. 1 singles, Oregon's Charlie McMannes defeated Macayla Quinn 6-2, 6-1. Kayla Whip beat Monroe's Chelsea Miller at No. 2 singles 6-3, 7-5. The Cheesemakers' No. 2 doubles team of Allie Coplien and Erin Gellings lost to Taylor Anderson and Danielle Lee 6-4, 6-4.

"They had their chances," Saugstad said. "They were a little bit off. They weren't on top of their games like they usually are."
