Optimists No. 1 rally for win

MONROE - Erica Hegi turned in a dominating pitching performance in leading Monroe Optimists No. 1 to a 5-1 win in a Red League fastpitch softball game Sunday.

Hegi pitched a complete game and struck out 11. She gave up just one unearned run on four hits.

"She pitched great," Monroe coach Dale Buvid said. "Hats off to her. We played well defensively behind her."

Monroe trailed 1-0 through four innings. The Cheesemakers broke through with a four-run fifth inning. Kaylee Craigo singled up the middle and stole second. Rebecca Flannery had an RBI single. She stole second and scored on Kristin McArdle's groundout. Kendra Clark then crushed an RBI double to center to give Monroe a 3-1 lead. Optimists No. 1 scored their fourth run on Tasha Frie's sacrifice fly.

"We finally came through with some timely hits," Buvid said.

The Monroe Optimists No. 2 team defeated Argyle in a White league game 10-0, Sunday.

Monroe Optimists No. 1 will host Juda at 7:45 p.m. Sunday, at the Twining West diamond. Monroe Optimists No. 2 will play at Juda at 4 p.m. Sunday.
