MILTON - The Cheesemakers softball team seemed to have forgotten to take off their prom dresses and put on their uniforms Tuesday. Monroe's offense, defense and pitching failed to make the bus trip in a 13-0 loss in five innings.
"That sort of thing has happened before," said Cheesemakers' coach Dale Buvid, whose team had prom just three days earlier. "I'm not going to use that as an excuse, though. Maybe the lack of sleep had a little effect, but we walked way too many hitters, gave them too many outs on defense and didn't do anything at the plate."
Kristin McArdle got the team's only hit, and a controversial one at that, in the first inning. With a runner on second, McArdle hit a ball hard in the infield with the defender slightly looking at the advancing runner before throwing late to first.
The Cheesemakers, which had three walks in the contest, loaded the bases in the opening inning but failed to produce a run. Moments later, Buvid said, Monroe gave the Red Hawks six outs as four runs crossed the plate. Milton scored three runs in each of the final three innings. Monroe finished the game with four errors.
"We got off to a bad start and never recovered," Buvid said. "It was a little disappointing because we played so well Thursday against Edgewood. Now Edgewood isn't as good as Milton, but we really thought we had turned the corner."
