MOUNT HOREB - Jade Newman scored two goals to lead the Mount Horeb boys soccer team to a 7-1 win over Monroe in the regular season finale Saturday.
With the win, Mount Horeb (13-4-1), ranked No. 2 in the Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association Division 3 state poll, rolls into the postseason with 10 straight wins.
"I wanted them to play well and if we got behind not to give up," Monroe coach Tony Vasquez said of the Cheesemakers. "We got to rest some players in the second half. The guys I played kept their intensity up. The final 20 minutes or so I think we outplayed them. The effort was really good."
The Vikings scored four goals in the first half. Monroe junior goalie Deven Schulte had 14 saves. Mount Horeb outshot the Monroe 21-6.
Sophomore Alex Barradas scored a goal at 52 minutes, 20 seconds to put the Cheesemakers on the board.
Monroe (6-11-2) received a 12th seed in the regional and will play at Madison Edgewood Thursday. Edgewood beat the Cheesemakers 4-2 earlier this year, but two goals came on penalty kicks.
"I know the guys want another shot at Edgewood," Vasquez said. "The last time we played them they scored two goals on penalty kicks, we played a man down in the second half and we were still able to manage to come back and tie it."
