Nice balance powers Ponies past Princeton

MOINTICELLO - Four players scored in double figures to lead the No. 4 seed Monticello Ponies to a 60-48 win over No. 13 seed Princeton in a WIAA Division 5 regional quarterfinal Tuesday night.

Monticello senior Lukas Kolasch led the way with 16 points, followed by junior Bryce Klitzke with 13, senior Evan Schultz with 11, and junior Jesse Halvorson with 10.

The Ponies took a 27-19 halftime lead and went 13 of 22 at the free throw line for the game to hold off the Tigers. Monticello (14-8) will host No. 5 seed Juda Friday in the regional semifinal.

Randolph 75, Argyle 31

RANDOLPH - The defending Division 5 state champion Randolph Rockets took the first step in their quest for a record 10th state championship by rolling over the Argyle Orioles, 75-31 in a division 5 regional quarterfinal.

The No. 1 seeded Rockets connected on 19 of their first 24 shots and raced out to a 48-18 halftime lead on the No. 16 seed Orioles.

Sophomore Christopher Severson led the Orioles with 12 points. Argyle was plagued by turnovers, committing 28 for the game. The Orioles ended their season with a record of 3-19.

Central Wis. CHR. 60, Black Hawk 46

WAUPUN - The Black Hawk Warriors put themselves in position to pull an upset as a No. 11 seed on the road at fifth-seeded Central Wisconsin Christian.

The Warriors trailed 18-14 at halftime to the Crusaders, but the Warriors were outscored 24-13 in the third quarter and eventually lost, 60-46 in a division 5 regional quarterfinal.

The Warriors shot 10 of 11 from the free throw line and got a pair of 3-pointers from senior Jordan Coulthard and junior Coltin Piefer, but couldn't stage a second half rally. Black Hawk sophomore Seth Butler scored 13 points to lead the Warriors and Piefer added 10 as Black Hawk finished their season with a record of 11-12.

Barneveld 76, Pdcatonica 34

BARNEVELD - Pecatonica ended a winless month of February with a loss in a Division 5 regional quarterfinal.

Just 18 days ago, the No. 14 seeded Vikings lost to Barneveld by just 11 points, 66-55, but this time the No. 3-seeded Eagles got off to a 23-5 first quarter lead and never looked back.

Freshman Drew Schliem was the leading scorer for Pecatonica with eight points. Seniors J.J. Hogan and Dillon Conwell each scored seven points for the Vikings.

Pecatonica (4-19) ended the season on a nine-game losing streak.
