WATERLOO - The New Glarus girls basketball team rode a big first quarter to a 61-45 Capitol South Conference win over Waterloo Friday night.
The Glarner Knights (6-5, 3-1 Capitol South) raced out to a 21-8 first quarter lead en route to building a 13-point halftime lead. New Glarus senior Michelle Preston scored 14 points, which included four 3-pointers. Preston hit three 3-pointers in the first quarter to spark the Knights' run.
Waterloo played a 2-3 zone to limit the Knights' inside game.
"At halftime, we set goals for the offense," New Glarus coach Braden Rindy said. "We had to kick it outside. We shot well."
The Knights put the game away by outscoring Waterloo 17-10 in the third quarter.
New Glarus sophomore Alycia Atwell scored 11 points and senior Rachel Miller had nine. Fellow senior Tanya Gruter added eight points.
