NEW GLARUS - Thursday's game against Wis. 69 rivals ended up favoring the home team, as the lady Knights escaped with a 41-34 victory.
Senior Sierra Watrud started the game off strong for New Glarus, as she scored nine of her team's 10 first quarter points. However Belleville was able keep her in check throughout the second, and only trailed by three points as both teams headed into intermission.
After some halftime adjustments, New Glarus coach Megan Scheele and her team were able to put together a strong third quarter that ended up being the difference-maker, as New Glarus capped off an exciting night by outscoring the Wildcats 26-22 in the second half.
"This game was just fun to be a part of," Scheele said. "The two teams know each other and with it being a conference game, there was an extra dimension of intensity. Our girls responded well with the way they started the second half, and it made for a very exciting game."
Vanessa Narveson led the Knights with 16 points, while Watrud ended the game with 11 points.
Black Hawk 62, Pecatonica 33
BLANCHARDVILLE - For the Black Hawk girls basketball team, Thursday night's matchup against Pecatonica provided opportunities for multiple players to log quality minutes against a quality opponent. In the end, Black Hawk came away with a 62-33 victory over the host Vikings.
"Tonight was a nice win, (as) everybody got opportunities for us," Black Hawk coach Mike Flanagan said.
The visiting Warriors started the game with a fast pace, scoring 22 points in the opening quarter while limiting a short-handed Pecatonica team to only seven points. Despite a last quarter surge by the Vikings, the Warriors held on for the victory.
"I thought we played well in terms of our ball-handling and defensive effort," Flanagan said.
"Pecatonica is a tough team as they showed it in the final quarter, but we will take some of the things that we did well tonight and try to carry them over to our next game."
Jen Wellnitz scored a game-high 18 points for the Warriors, who saw a slew of players score throughout the game.
For Pecatonica, coach Scott Carlson thought his team played well despite the absence of three of his team's players.
"We had some defensive breakdowns, but we were able to have a productive fourth quarter, and overall I thought we played a solid game."
Alexandra Ihm scored 10 points for the Vikings, who travel to travel to Mineral Point on Saturday, Jan. 11.
Juda 39, Albany 35
ALBANY - It was a back-and-forth game between two Six Rivers East opponents on Thursday night as Juda escaped with a 39-35 victory over the host Comets.
After trailing by four points heading into halftime, Albany was able to surge back and take the lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Unfortunately for the Comets, late game woes were the deciding factor, as the Comets were unable to converge on open shots as they only managed four points.
Molly Marass had 11 points for the Panthers, who with the win, pick up their first conference victory of the season.
Lyndsay Hoesly had a solid game for the Comets, scoring a game-high 17 points.
Barneveld 73, Argyle 36
BARNEVELD - The Argyle girls basketball had a tall task in trying to stop an undefeated Barneveld team on Thursday night. Unfortuntaely for the Orioles, they struggled in their match-up as the host Golden Eagles saw 10 players score en route to a 73-36 win.
Jenna Langmeier had 12 points for the Orioles (2-4, 1-2) who travel to Warren on Monday, Jan. 13.
Mineral Point 64, Darlington 44
DARLINGTON - The Darlington girls basketball team lost a tough matchup against Mineral Point, 64-44.
In the loss, Redbirds coach Kelly Rose acknowledged some areas for improvement for her team, but remained hopeful nonetheless.
"We need to improve our transition defense and boxing out," Rose said. "But overall I thought we gave a solid effort tonight."
Mariah Wiegel and Taryn Rankin scored nine points apiece for the Redbirds (1-7, 0-3).
