BELLEVILLE - New Glarus volleyball coach Elizabeth Rasmussen doesn't think first-match jitters were the main reason why the Knights had stretches where they struggled with service receive Tuesday at the Belleville Quad.
"Honestly, I don't think it has anything to do with the first match," Rasmussen said. "I just think they need more practice passing. I think our passing needs work. If it doesn't get to the setter, then it's usually off and goes between hitters."
The Glarner Knights opened their season by dropping three matches at the Belleville Quad.
"We really need to get the excitement level up," Rasmussen said. The other teams like Belleville come into the Quad with cheers ready to go to state. They have high hopes for themselves. I want our team to have high hopes. We need to build the excitement with the leaders on the team."
New Glarus opened the quad with a rocky start against Belleville. The Wildcats swept three games, 25-15, 25-9 and 25-20.
The Knights lost their second match to Division 2 Dodgeville, 23-25, 21-25, 21-25. In the final match, the Knights lost to Mount Horeb, 27-25, 14-25, 21-25.
New Glarus played a tight first game until midway through the game when the Knights' service receive broke down and the Wildcats reeled off seven of the next eight points to take a commanding 17-11 lead.
The Wildcats jumped out to an insurmountable 12-4 lead in the second game as the Knights struggled with service receive.

The Wildcats battled back with an ace and took a 12-9 lead. Narveson then came through with three straight service points, which was highlighted by Mara Gartzke's tip kill to give the Knights a 17-16 lead.
The Wildcats battled back to steal the third game by finishing with a flurry, which included four straight service points and three back-breaking aces.

New Glarus made strides during the quad by beating Mount Horeb 27-25 in the first game before dropping the last two.
