My View: Marking new territory

I first envisioned covering sports in Monroe when my daughter, Kayleigh, played YMCA basketball this winter.

It was impressive watching my daughter try to dribble the ball between her legs in a figure eight pattern.

I flashed back to junior high and recalled my struggles trying to dribble a basketball between my legs. It was amazing the progress a kindergartner made with a gym full of dedicated coaches.

Making the move from Eagle and Cow Chip Festival country to the cheese capital is an exciting sports adventure. I have worked as a sports reporter the past four years at the Sauk Prairie Eagle in Sauk City. Now I can't wait for my debut at The Monroe Times.

The first page I turned to in the newspaper as a child was the sports pages. I'm an avid sports fan. As a Chicago Cubs and Bears fan, I expect to get razzed. I don't believe in Billy Goat curses or a 100-year hex.

My wife, Anna, teaches sixth grade at Carl Sandburg Middle School in Freeport, Ill. where she has taught 10 years. Right now I live in New Glarus, but look forward to moving to Monroe this summer after Kayleigh finishes kindergarten.

May is the March Madness of spring prep sports. I look forward to building relationships and following the postseason runs of Six Rivers East clubs, Brodhead, Darlington and the Cheesemakers.
