MONROE - Former Monroe Country Club golf professional Mike Muranyi, along with Monroe golf coach Brian Jensen, gave golf lessons to 150 students at Monroe Middle School last week.

Muranyi launched the Mike Muranyi Junior Golf Foundation last year to promote golf in Green County. The Muranyi Junior Golf Foundation will award 25 to 30 one-year discounted, junior golf scholarships to Monroe Country Club for children ages 9 to 18.

The deadline to submit scholarships is May 15.

"I felt like that was a good place to start to get into the middle school," Muranyi said. "There are so many kids who have never hit a golf ball. I just want to give kids a chance to swing and hit a golf ball and learn about golf."

Muranyi is a former Wisconsin State Open champion, player of the year, match play champion, Senior Wisconsin PGA champion and Wisconsin Senior Open champion. He also played in the Senior U.S. Open.

Applications for the Muranyi Junior Golf Foundation are available at the Monroe Country Club pro shop by contacting 325-3159 or online at mmjgf.com. The Muranyi Junior Golf Foundation will pay $125 of the $225 membership fee for scholarship participants. Those participants on free lunch if selected will have their membership paid.

Muranyi said there are already 30 who have applied. The Muranyi Golf Foundation program will include golf lessons for seven weeks and give golfers the chance to compete in junior tournaments throughout the summer. Golf lessons are also expanding to incorporate the Monroe Park and Rec golf program.
