MOUNT HOREB - The Monroe baseball team ran into a hitting slump and lost a doubleheader to Mount Horeb on Saturday.

Mount Horeb pounded out 23 hits combined in two games en route to beating Monroe 10-0 in five innings and 14-0 in five innings. Monroe (1-3) managed just four hits combined in the two games.

"We have to get out of our hitting funk," Monroe coach Dustin Huffman said. "We are not swinging the bats really well right now."

In the first game, the Vikings had a six-run fifth inning to win the game. Monroe's Max Lang pitched 41⁄3 innings and gave up six earned runs on six hits and walked five. Senior Jacob Ritschard pitched1⁄3 of an inning and gave up two earned runs on five hits.

"They (Mount Horeb) put the ball in play and hit it hard," Huffman said. "Whenever your No. 7 hitter has two home runs and two doubles like they had it's going to be a great day."

The two hits for the Cheesemakers came on senior Hogan Edwards' single in the third and junior Hunter Ward's single in the fourth.

The Cheesemakers twice had two runners on with one out, but couldn't score a run. The Cheesemakers loaded the bases with two outs in the fifth, but again didn't score.

"We just couldn't get a hit," Huffman said.

In the second game, the Vikings scored five runs in the first off Monroe senior pitcher Brad Ripp. The Vikings broke the game open with an eight-run third. Ripp pitched five innings and gave up 12 runs on 12 hits. He struck out three and walked four.

Senior Isaac Allen went 2-for-2 to lead the Cheesemakers at the plate. Allen singled in the second and doubled in the fifth.
