FORT ATKINSON - Monroe junior ace pitcher Logan Weckerly injured his ankle in practice and the Cheesemakers turned to a freshman to pitch against Mount Horeb in the Badger Challenge Saturday.
Monroe brought up freshman Hogan Edwards to pitch and Mount Horeb slugged its way to a 15-4 win over the Cheesemakers. Edwards pitched four innings and gave up seven earned runs on seven hits. He struck out three and walked four. With the loss, Monroe drops to (2-15, 1-8 Badger South).
"With Logan's injury, it shortens our pitching staff," Monroe coach Dustin Huffman said. "I saw Hogan pitch in the spring in the gym. He had good velocity and command. For the most part, he did what we asked him to do which was throw strikes. He has some things to improve on as a freshman. I think he will benefit from the experience."
Huff-man said Weckerly may have a broken ankle.
"It doesn't look good," Huffman said. "If it is a broken ankle, he is done for the season. We are not relying on him to come back and pitch. Maybe there is just a lot of swelling and it's not a break."
Monroe sophomore Brent Edmunds pitched 2/3 of an inning and gave up seven earned runs on one hit and walked five.
The Cheesemakers had five hits with one each from Carter Adkins (1-for-3), Chase Hellenbrand (1-for-3 and one RBI), junior Desmond Ford (1-for-2), Edwards (1-for-2) and Mitch Swanson (1-for-2 with one RBI).
Monroe plays a makeup game at Stoughton today and then hosts the Vikings Tuesday. The Cheesemakers play five games this week before regional play begins.
