BURLINGTON - Burlington Catholic Central made a close game look like a runaway, defeating Monticello in a WIAA Division 4 baseball regional final, 10-0, in five innings Wednesday.
"We played four really good innings of baseball," Monticello head coach Jason Pinnow said. "One bad inning makes it look like it was a blowout."
Catholic Central scored a run in each of the first three innings, but erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth, ending the game early.
"They had bases loaded with nobody out and we tried to get the runner at home, but the throw brought the catcher off the plate. That took the wind out of our sails," Pinnow said.
Lucas Kolasch took the loss on the hill, pitching 4 2/3 innings while striking out three. Tyler Ritschard relieved Kolasch, but the winning run crossed home plate before the third out could be made. Monticello had three errors in the contest.
The Ponies (10-10) graduate a slew of seniors, which helped the program finish second in the Six Rivers East this season.
"We had a great season. We got to 10 wins and finished second in a really competitive conference. It's hard to see them (the seniors) go out like this, but I'm proud of them, they left it all on the field.
Monticello had three hits in the game. Kolasch, Ritschard and senior Tyler Meier each hit singles. Catholic Central had nine hits.
