Monticello trumps Albany; Brodhead no-hits Palmyra-Eagle

MONTICELLO - Sophomore second baseman Becky Nelson made a game-changing play to help Monticello beat Albany 8-2 Thursday.

With the bases loaded and one out in the top of the sixth inning, Nelson made a diving catch behind first base to preserve the Ponies' 7-2 lead.

"She has a great glove," Monticello coach Duane Garrison said. "I will give her that. She will run through walls for me. She will do everything she can to make a catch."

Monticello junior Taylor Pfeuti went 3-for-4 to lead the Ponies. Monticello sophomore Karlie Klossner was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Monticello (4-2, 2-1 Six Rivers East) pounded out 10 hits.

Klossner went the distance and gave up just two unearned runs on six hits. She struck out five and walked five.

Albany's Tiffany Masseur and senior Trisha Tourdot each were 1-for-2. Albany sophomore Katie Krupke pitched six innings and gave up eight runs on 10 hits. She walked just two. With the loss, Albany drops to 1-3, 1-3.



Darlington 10, Black Hawk 5

DARLINGTON - The Darlington softball team received a big game from Emily Hastings who had a big game at the plate to lead the Redbirds to a 10-5 win over Black Hawk Thursday.

Hastings went 4-for-4 and had five RBIs.

"It was a good win," Darlington coach Bob Wiegel said. "We played well and hit the ball well."

Darlington (2-6) broke the game open with a six-run third inning. Hastings had a three-run double in the third. Black Hawk (0-7, 0-4 Six Rivers East) had six errors in the game.

Darlington sophomore Laura Steiner pitched six innings and gave up five runs on 10 hits. She struck out six and walked one. Darlinton's Savannah Winters was 2-for-4 and Elle Westerman was 2-for-5.

Black Hawk's Kayla Melland struck out three and walked just one.

"Melland pitched a good game," Black Hawk coach Roger Jackson said. "They hit the ball pretty well, but we didn't make plays for her."

Black Hawk had five players with multi-hit games including Savanna Kaster (3-for-4), Ashley Schiferl (2-for-3), Melissa Wellnitz (2-for-4), Tierney Cushman (2-for-4) and Jordan Rupnow (2-for-4).

Brodhead 12, Palmyra-Eagle 0

BRODHEAD - Junior Erika Stampfli and freshman Amanda Pickel combined on a no-hitter to lead the Cardinals to a 12-0 win in five innings over Palmyra-Eagle in Rock Valley South conference action.

Junior Mariah Mohns went 2-for-3 and scored two runs for the Cardinals.

Brodhead (8-1, 6-0 Rock Valley South) will host Fort Atkinson today.

Waterloo 13,

New Glarus 0

NEW GLARUS - For the second time in a week, the Glarner Knights failed to get a hit in a game, this time by the Waterloo Pirates, 13-0, in Capitol South conference action.

New Glarus had only one baserunner via a walk while the Pirates scored in every inning except for one.

New Glarus (0-7, 0-3 Capitol South) will travel to Pecatonica today.

JUDA 8, Argyle 4

JUDA - Sophomore Amber Ramos allowed just three hits to lead the Panthers to an 8-4 win over the Argyle Orioles in Six Rivers East conference play Thursday.

Junior Lauren Dunwiddie went 2-for-2 and sophomore C.J. Dunwiddie hit a triple for the Panthers.

Senior Jackie Dammen drove in a pair of runs in the seventh with a double for Argyle.

Juda (3-0 Six Rivers East) will face Albany Monday while Argyle (3-3, 1-2 Six Rivers East) will host Potosi in non-conference play today.
