MONTICELLO - The Ponies split a Six Rivers East doubleheader with Barneveld on Friday. Monticello won the first game on a walk-off in extra innings before falling hard in the nightcap.

Freshman Marissa Berg was the hero in the opener, plating the game-tying and winning runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.

"We had the heart of our order up, and she's been hitting the ball real well as of late," Monticello coach Duane Garrison said of Berg.

The Ponies held a 2-0 lead after the second inning, but Barneveld tied it up at 2-2 in the top of the seventh. A run in the top of the ninth off Monticello starter Karlie Klossner put the Ponies on their heels.

Klossner allowed two walks and 12 hits while striking out two batters to get the win.

In the second game, Monticello (8-2, 4-2) managed just four hits. It was the three defensive errors that put the Ponies under. Barneveld led 2-1 after three innings, but scored four runs in the top of the fourth to take a commanding 6-1 lead.

"It was just one bad inning in the fourth. We booted it around and that took the wind right out of our sails," Garrison said of his team's 7-1 loss.

In other area action, New Glarus lost to Kenosha Christian Life 16-6.
