CAMBRIDGE - The Monticello girls basketball team turned to a press to set the tempo in a 58-34 win over Hustisford in the Cambridge tournament Saturday.
"It was a team we thought we could press and force into some turnovers," Monticello coach Lori Brokopp said. "We put the press on and it did wonders for us. We wanted to make the game more of our tempo."
Monticello (7-3, 2-0 Six Rivers East) jumped out to a 14-7 lead and led by 13 points at halftime. Monticello sophomore Jordan Garrison scored a team-high 12 points. Sophomore Alyssah Kubly and senior Amy Silver each added 10 points.
All 10 players for the Ponies scored.
"We had a lot of contributions from everybody on the team," Brokopp said. "It was a team effort."
The Ponies outscored Hustisford 28-17 in the second half. The Ponies shot just 12 of 21 from the free throw line.
Monticello will host Barneveld in a Six Rivers Conference showdown on Thursday. If Monticello can beat Barneveld, they would earn a share of the lead in the conference. Barneveld has won its first three conference games by an average of 41 points.
"I told the girls that no one yet has given Barneveld any competition," Brokopp said. "They (Barneveld) are a very good team. They have beat some good teams by a lot. Our thought process is if we are in it in the third or fourth quarter that will be a victory. We have the talent. We have to be on and take care of the basketball and we can give them a game."
